    R ough night, Dr. Edwin Maxwell muttered, as he sat at his desk completing a death certificate.

    Selma put her hands on her husband’s shoulders and lightly kissed the top of his head. Mattie told me you lost a patient and they brought in a beat-up saloon girl.

    Yeah. Ed leaned his head back against his wife’s apron. At times like this I wonder if we did the right thing leaving Boston.

    You wanted excitement. Selma combed her fingers through his thinning hair. Coming West certainly fulfilled that wish. Where’s Mattie now?

    I sent her home to get some rest. I won’t need a nurse until the saloons get busy this evening.

    No offense, but you look beat, my dear.

    I am exhausted, Ed answered. We tried hard to save that young woman, but she was too far gone with an infection. He shook his head.

    Was she the girl who came in on the stagecoach yesterday, sick as a dog?

    The same. Poor kid. He took Selma’s hand in his. Would you mind taking care of things for a while? I’ve got to get some sleep. I’m so tired I can’t see straight.

    Wouldn’t mind at all. Selma patted her husband’s shoulder and moved to a nearby chair. Is there anything I need to do for your surviving patient?

    No, Ed said. She’s all right, except for being banged up. You know Bennie. He hits them where the bruises won’t show. This one’s named Ruth, I think. Just keep her quiet, let her rest today. Try to talk her into going home to her folks, if she has any. Ed yawned. "Oh, and look through
