Step-by Step Guide to Using
the Chinese Almanac 2019
Welcome to this section of the book that illustrates the quick and easy way to use the Chinese Almanac presented in the ensuing pages.
For a start, familiarize yourself with the terminology in the Almanac:
For example, if you would like to select an auspicious date to make an agreement or sign a contract. The suggested steps are as follows:
Step 1 – Establish range of possible dates
Start by establishing the possible range of dates that you would be able to consider – for example, in the 1st week of Feb 2019;
Step 2 – Identify Western Dates in Almanac
Refer to the Almanac 2019 and identify the Western Dates 4th Feb 2019 (Monday) to 8th of Feb (Friday) 2019, being the dates for the 1st week of Feb 2019;
Step 3 – Scan for Suitable Activities
Look at the column Suitable Activities
for each of the Western dates identified in Step 2 for the description Making an agreement or signing a contract
;
Step 4 – Filter for suitable Western Dates
Identify the Western Dates that contain the above description
Result: 7th Feb 2019 (Thursday)
Step 5 – Filter for possible Western Dates
At this point, there is only suitable Western Date identified. In the event that there are more than 1 suitable Western Dates identified, depending on the circumstances and activities to be undertaken, you can decide on which are the logical and possible dates for you.
Step 6 – Filter for possible Auspicious Time
Refer to the column on Auspicious Time for the above dates to select the best time to make an agreement or sign a contract. As mentioned earlier, you will need to refer to page 5 to decode the Chinese classical terms into our today’s time zone equivalent.
In this example, the Auspicious Times identified for the above date are as follows:
7th Feb 2019
Based on the above findings, only Chen time slot is possible as it is the normal working hours for making an agreement or signing a contract.
Apart from the above, a few key observations can be noted as follows:
(a) It can sometimes be quite challenging to find the Auspicious Time that corresponds to your desired time of action after identifying the possible Western Dates.
If situation does not permit, you may have to settle with choosing only the right day. The right timing is an added bonus
to your actions.
(b) If you still insist on having the right timing as your action is very crucial/ critical, you will have to expand the range of possible dates in Step 1 to cover a wider range of Western Dates for achieving your desired right day, right time
objective.
Apart from the above, you may also refer to the Almanac of Jian Chu School as another alternative to find out the suitability of the dates. The Almanac of Jian Chu School is denoted by the word in Bold stated in the Flow of Qi of each date. Once you have identified the Bold word, search for it from pages 144 – 146 to find the suitable / unsuitable activities that it represents. Check if the activity that you wish to undertake is a suitable / unsuitable activity for that day.
