    I WATCHED THE LITTLE punk from my car, which had been parked across the street. He strolled out of his shabby apartment complex and paused just outside the beige security gate. It was kind of ironic that he lived in a secured building when he was the one his neighbors should probably be worried about. The neighborhood had been nice once upon a time but the social decline was obviated by the empty cups and cigarette butts strewn against the faded red curb. Black iron bars covered the windows of rundown houses on the block. Upkeep in the area had taken a backseat to security.

    The suspect smiled at something on his phone, cupped a hand over his mouth and laughed. He walked behind an old Hyundai with a broken window and stopped to look inside the vehicle. The criminal mind was always looking for an opportunity.
