Life in the 22nd Century-Project Minus Four
By Jim Scarano

About this ebook
In this book, the author recommends a project that will ensure a crime-free, abundant 22nd century. He has aptly called this project “Project Minus Four”, which is intended to describe the four elemental concepts that need to be removed from a civilised society in order to free it from crime, poverty, social and national conflicts, domestic violence and needless tragedies, such as acts of terror, wars, buildings going up in flames, killing all who live in them, as well as all kinds of “accidents” that result on account of people being too anxious, too angry, too frustrated, or too tense—all of which are a direct result of the pressure that the economic and/or the social system puts on them. In this book, the author has set down the details of how these problems are to be solved and what the society in the 22nd century can expect to be like if his Project Minus Four is implemented now.
Jim Scarano
Italian-born Jim (Luigi) Scarano migrated to Australia at age 13 with his mother and two younger siblings in 1956. From no knowledge of English at all, we find him passing his ‘leaving certificate’ exam by the time he is 19. At age 30, he obtains his BSc in Electrical Engineering, is married, and will spend the rest of his working life as an Electrical Engineer and Technical Writer, while in his spare time, he continues his relentless academic pursuits: obtaining a BA in Psychology and obtaining a Diploma in Sanskrit. He becomes a part-time teacher of the Alexander Technique while continuing his study of esoteric philosophy, yoga, meditation and various other ‘self-knowledge’ type of practices. It’s only in his retirement years that he looks back at world events over the previous 50–60 years only to find that crime, economic problems, national as well as domestic issues have not changed for the better, but continue to become headlines in the daily news. As a result of his cogitation and objective analysis, he discovers the basic-root causes of all these problems and hence his current work.

Gwen and Ray Land in Sydney, Australia
The time is 1950. The place is Sydney, Australia on a Sunday, in a small park not too far from Sydney Central. A young couple – well they’re not a couple just yet, just friends – are sitting on a park bench just chatting while they eat their lunch and enjoying the view and the peace and quiet.
Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, another young couple appear a short distance away, and seem to be intent on coming over to talk to them. Jack and Jennifer – that’s the couple sitting on the bench – stare at the approaching couple, wondering what their intention is and whether they should panic and run, or just keep cool and wait and see. The approaching couple appears to be friendly in their countenance, and do not show any signs of threat, so, Jack and Jennifer remain seated, partly anxious and partly curious.
As the foreign couple get close enough to be heard, the girl speaks first:
Hi, there! May we join you? We have just wandered from the 22nd century and would like to ask for your help.
The two visitors, Ray and Gwen, are indeed from the year 2110. Although they have ordinary jobs, Ray in the housing industry and Gwen in computers and data processing, their hobby is research in the area of family history and political changes globally.
Ray thought that Gwen’s approach was a bit unwise, considering that she must have known from her research back in 2110 that in 1950, casual space-time travelling was virtually unthought of.
The couple at the bench stopped chewing with mouths open and eyes aghast with incredulity and surprise. Is this some kind of joke? We didn’t see or hear any spaceship land nearby; so what is your game?
It was Jack who spoke.
So Ray volunteered to set the couple at ease by saying: Don’t worry; we are not joking and do not intend to harm you. And yes, you would not have heard any spaceship because that is not how we time travel in the 22nd century. We, in fact, used what is very common in our time: the GoPs, which is, as we believe, a direct development of the original GPS of your time.
What the hell is a GPS of our time?
asked Jennifer.
And then it occurred to Ray that in the early ’50s even the GPS was not commonly known or even used. So Ray went on to explain: Again, we must apologise for startling you like this. May we sit down?
By now, the couple at the bench were both somewhat reassured and at the same time aroused and curious to hear more.
Jennifer and Jack made room on the bench and Gwen and Ray sat down.
My name is Jack, and this is Jennifer,
said Jack.
I am Ray and this is my colleague Gwen,
said Ray, as both he and Gwen sat down, Gwen next to Jennifer and Ray next to Jack.
You see,
Ray continued, in a few years you will have a small device that uses GPS or global positioning system that will enable people to locate places anywhere on the planet by the use of high-frequency waves transmitted and received by a computerised system situated in a satellite circling the earth…
You were saying
, interrupted Jack, that you transported yourself here by GPS, not by spaceship. Tell us about that first; then you can think about answering our other one thousand questions.
Yes,
said Ray, most transportation is done by GoPs in our time. This is because scientists were able to discover that just about everything can be transformed into waves which can then be transmitted much like the radio and television waves of your time. With the GoPs, we can pick a time we want to go to and a place, enter the coordinates and press go. So Gwen and I have decided to come back here to this time and place to see for ourselves that what they teach the kids in the schools of our time is true.
I see,
interjected Jennifer, and how long do you intend to spend here? And what was it that you wanted us to help you with?
I am glad you asked me that,
said Gwen, because we would like to see some movies while we’re here; especially movies about crime, money, conflict, poverty, religion, marriage, and so on. This, because in our time many problems connected with these concepts no longer exist.
That’s an interesting way to refer to these things,
suggested Jack. You refer to money, marriage, crime and the other things as concepts – I wouldn’t mind hearing why you think they are just concepts.
Yes, me too,
added Jennifer. "But first I would like to hear more about the GPS system that you mentioned in passing just now. Did you not say that in a few years, we are going to develop
