    PREFACE

Not long ago my brother and I were painting a friend’s house. As a teenager my brother had accepted Jesus as his Lord but, over the years he has drifted away from God. As we talked, our conversation eventually turned to a discussion about religion. It was then that he commented that he didn’t understand why God doesn’t communicate directly to us anymore, and why he leaves so much up to faith! For a moment I couldn’t respond, a thousand different answers to his question ran through my mind.

I thought about using the Israelites who followed Moses out of Egypt as an example. They got to see the power of God firsthand. First through the plagues that God brought to free them from captivity. Then by the whirl wind of dust in the day, and fire by night that he used to protect and lead them. The parting of the Red Sea as Pharos army pursued them. His care for them in the wilderness when he gave them manna and quail to eat and water to drink . Yet despite all the marvelous things that God did to prove his presence and love for his people, many chose to forsake him as soon as Moses left them to receive the 10 commandments.

Ultimately I answered my brother by explaining that God does communicate directly to us. He’s done it by writing his words in a book known as the holy bible. That book took over 1,800 years for him to write. In it he explains how we should live our lives and treat those around us. He warns us about the traps that Satan will use to try and deceive us, and what the consequences of following those are. He also tells us what we need to do to receive his grace. And it is there that he also reveals what his plans for mankind and this world are.

Some think that if there is a God he doesn’t care about us, or that he is just sitting idly by watching what happens in the world. I can assure you that he cares very much, and knows exactly what is going on. God has a definite plan and purpose for this world. If we want to know what that plan is and what God has to say, we need to read his book. One doesn’t have to be a scholar, they just need to read and let God’s words speak for themselves.

Sadly, there are many who choose not to read the words God has given to us. By doing so they miss the message of love and hope that he has for them. The love of a God who was willing to die on a cross to pay the price of our sins. The hope that he will indeed someday return as he tells us he will and establish a new heaven and earth. One where those who do follow him will live and dwell for all eternity.

Does God communicate with us? Yes he does. It’s up to us though to hear and answer him. In the following pages we will explore several bible passages to discover what God’s plan for his people
