    Preface

July 16 2008, the day after the graduates of Bismarck boarding school graduated and had their prom night. They day that the students would leave the school with their belongings and go to their homes for three months of summer break.

Early in the morning, about 08h30 the students would be locking their dormitories and would be coming down to leave. Cars and taxies were parked in front of the school lawn waiting for students to arrive. They waited and waited until, suddenly; the first student came from the doors and then was followed by more. Most of the students ran to the cars and taxies whilst the graduates and maybe some of the juniors walked towards the parking lot. But most of the graduates were running a little late on their packing but the others walked on towards the parking lot. But that’s only the start of trouble.

A boy named Nate Tennison was the first to reach the parking lot and then two of his friends met up with him a few seconds later, named Veronica Cathy and Jake Tomas. Finally the last two friends met up, the brother and sister, Tracey and Ben Harrison, then lastly was Zack Smith. Nate stayed completely still and then he sniffed the air.

    Nate, what’s wrong? Veronica asked.

Do you smell that? he said.

Yes, said Tracey. They looked at each other and then she pushed her legs into a run. The others followed, Jake picked up Veronica and they ran towards the smell, leaving their bags on the grass next to the pavement of the parking lot. They ran as fast as they could, their speed was amazingly fast, they ran about fifty miles an hour. Veronica couldn’t run fast like what they could and that’s why she was being carried.

Finally they reached the middle of the parking lot, the part that had been next to one of the buildings that was the band room.

Oh my sweet lord, said Veronica as Jake set her on the floor. They stared at the parking lot all destroyed. A long break of bricks pulled out of the pavement and scattered everywhere. The building windows were shattered to pieces and a green buggy with a hug dent that could perfectly fit to someone’s shoulders. And a cloud of strange purple smoke that blew off to the west.

What the hell happened here? Ben asked unsure.

It could only be one thing, said Jake. Everyone stayed quiet. Nate walked a few steps and found one of the objects he had been looking for. A huge pile of smoking ashes that let off a small wind of more smoke. Tracey shook her head and looked to one of the broken windows. She and Ben slowly walked to it and she examined the broken glass.

Veronica, Jake, call Nate and Zack and come, he said and he and Tracey ran towards the door of the building. Jake picked up Veronica again and ran for the doors. Nate walked around to the broken windows and jumped up onto the frame and climbed through as the others walked through the door of the band room. Jake set Veronica on her feet and she walked to one of the other windows and examined the glass on the floor and then the broken glass in the frame.

Nate looked at the destruction in the room. He felt slightly angry. The whole bunch of guitars lay on the floor all broken and snapped at the bridges or necks with snapped strings. And noticeably a small puddle of blood on the floor and on some of the broken instruments. The trophy case door, smashed and scattered over the floor with the trophies all dented in the case and on the floor with surprisingly more dried blood scratches.

    Nate, Tracey said.

He walked up to Tracey, crouched on her hunches in front of a pool of almost dried blood. Nate stared at the blood, ready to burst into anger. Tracey became furious and her body shook, the others walked to where Nate stood and they all started to shake with shock and anger.

This . . . is Tanya’s blood, she whispered, trying to keep herself in one peace. Nate squeezed his eyes shut and his hands balled into hard fists.

Veronica, go to the Headmistress and get her here, we have something that needs to be done, said Jake furiously as Veronica cried a few tears from Tanya’s blood everywhere.

She turned around and ran for the door.

At a sudden second that passed, the rest of the pack ran one by one through the broken windows and they ran past the parking lot into the forest. As they ran they pulled off as much of their clothes as they could save and then they disappeared behind a little cloud of purple and blue dust. Out from the magical pretty dust appeared a pack of graceful giant wolves.

They followed each other through the forest.

    1

    Summer.

The summer days were hot, mostly because summer was the season that Bismarck doesn’t get more that two weeks of rain. Today was 21 September 2008, Sunday, a week away from the day Dyllan and I would be going to Alaska Pacific University, Courtney and Kevin would be going to Seattle University and Sashalee and Sebastian would be going to University of Washington. But that would be in a week; right now I was camping on the mountains with Dyllan, where no one would find us or even come to. This place was nice be around, everywhere we went; we would both wear sunglasses and baseball caps. Dyllan wore these so he could block out direct sunlight and I wore the stuff so if anyone saw us, it wouldn’t seem suspicious. Right now, he was probably off to get some more water from the small river not too far from here.

I sat patiently on a rock by the campsite, watching the sunset whilst I waited for him to come back. The sun highlighted the sky in different colours of orange, yellow, red and pink. It was so beautiful and calming to watch a beautiful wonder of the universe. As the last ray of the sun disappeared behind the higher mountains it beamed a thin light of red and then slowly carried on.

A soft breeze blew against my skin and then I felt something very close, something that I loved, something that I want with all my heart.

Guess who? he whispered. My lips curved into a small smile, I leaned slightly forward as I turned just my upper body to look at him.

My sweet beloved Dyllan, I whispered back. He pulled me off the rock that I sat on and held me tight to his cold body. I leaned my head against his chest and closed my eyes as I felt him softly place his chin on top of my head. I lifted my head up and then he kissed my forehead, his cold lips cooled the skin on my forehead and then a shiver went down my spine. He gently placed his hand on my cheek and smiled at me; I softly smiled and blinked in encouragement. His golden eyes looked to my lips and then back to my eyes as his head moved forward so his lips could meet mine.

They were cold and hard as he lined my lips with his tongue and his cold sent tasted tingly and delicious. I felt like I was in heaven on earth, with my own personal angel that would never leave me or break my heart. He was something that was part of my life, something that I would die without. His lips felt softer now and his cold temperature made my lips numb, but at the feeling he pulled away and broke our kiss.

I opened my eyes to find his eyes looking straight into my heart and he kissed the tip of my nose.

He slowly let go of my body and just held my hand as he pulled me towards the fire pit.

I sat on the thick log that lay across the fire pit as he bent down over the pit and he picked up two stones.

Where is your lighter? I asked.

In the camping bag, but I want to try something, he said with a smile. He stood completely still and then he clapped the stones together, releasing sparks into the wood. He picked up a bunch of dry grass and threw it over the sparks and it caught a tiny flame. He stood ready and clapped the rocks together, releasing more sparks and the fire grew stronger.

He sat next to me on the log and he pulled me closer.

How’d you do that? I asked.

Flintstones, he said as he held them up in his hands.

Oh, so that’s a Flintstone, what did I use last time, I asked. He laughed. I leaned my head on his shoulder and he wrapped his arm around mine.

So what do you want to eat? he asked.

    Not really hungry, I said.

Again, are you ever hungry? he asked.

    No, I said.

Well okay, but don’t try and starve yourself, he commanded.

Oh, don’t worry about that, I’m not crazy, I said.

Of course you’re not, he said and stroked my hair.

The hour went by quickly, like father time had decided to turn sixty minutes into sixty seconds. The night had turned black and it now owned about ninety-thousand twinkling stars. It was even more beautiful than the twilight. Familiar music rang from the tent; Dyllan was up and already in the tent. He came out without his glasses and handed me my mobile. I looked to the little front window and then flipped my mobile open, the screen showed a little dog with an envelope in his mouth. I went into message options and opened the message it said:

    Tanya

Please make sure that you are ready when you leave for collage and don’t forget to dress warmly. Hope you are enjoying your holiday and so you know, we have finished packing the new house. Write back soon.

    Jasper

    Jasper

Would you relax, everything is fine. I have everything under control am going to Alaska, so obviously I’m going to dress warm. Hope you are well in South Africa.

    Tanya

I typed out and pressed send. I clapped my phone shut and slipped it in my pocket. I leaned on Dyllan’s shoulder and he leaned his head on top of mine as he twined his fingers through my fingers to hold my hand. It was quiet and the only sound was the crackling fire and some sounds from the nocturnal forest creatures.

Time went by as Dyllan told me a lot about Alaska and the snow, how beautiful it was and how everything was white. They ice there was thick enough to skate on or even have a hokey game. But ice didn’t really help the uncoordinated people. Like Jasper and I, we both inherited that from our mother. As soon as Dyllan finished on his opinion, it was about 22h00 and I was so tired. My eyelids were so heavy they felt like they weighed about ten pounds.

I think its time you went to bed, he said.

I think so, too, I said with a yawn. He stood up and he pulled me with him, he walked with me to the tent and unzipped it. I went in and he closed the zip behind him as he followed me in.

I kicked off my shoes and took off my belt, and then Dyllan put it in the corner of the tent. I shruggled into my sleeping bag and he sat in the corner by my head as he stroked my head. I could feel his cold fingers brush along my scalp and gently down my hair. But at this next second I couldn’t keep my heavy eyes open anymore and I fell into a peaceful drift. I slept dreamless tonight, which had probably meant that Dyllan wanted to give me a break from his dream exploring. And as I had done the whole summer I slept peacefully, knowing that I didn’t have to worry about any more cemetery or death visions between Rodney and me. But somewhere in the back of my mind, tells me that this is over, but only for now. Even having the thought in my sleep made me stress for a few seconds, until I was calm again.

I felt the air warm up and then my eyes flickered open from the cozy heat. Seeing my first sight of a blue synthetic dome around me, the second was the most beautiful thing in the world, which lay next to me on our blow-up mattress when I shifted over to my side. He looked straight into my eyes and smiled my favorite smile at me.

Are you ready to go home? he said. I smiled at him and nodded twice at him.

How do you feel for some fish? he asked.

Hmm . . . for breakfast, oh yes, I said. He pulled me with him as he sat up and he quickly kissed me. His lips were hard and cold, but made me fell like melting butter when his lips had touched mine for those three seconds.

Okay, I’m going to cook while you get dressed, he said and kissed the top of my head. He got to his feet in one second, pulled on a cap and sunglasses and was out the tent, zipping up the door in another.

I stretched my legs and pointed my toes; I felt this was the best sleep that I had gotten during the entire month.

I pulled my legs from my sleeping bag and stood up. I walked to the corner of the big tent and bent down in front of my bag. I zipped it open and pulled out a pair of navy blue jeans a white top that comes with a black vest and lastly a pair of flat pumps. I pulled off my clothes and quickly got dressed. I pulled on the jeans, I pulled on the shirt and then slid the vest through the armholes and quickly buttoned it in front as I multitasked by slipping my feel into the flat pumps. I pulled out a brush; I quickly yanked it through my hair and tied it up quickly with an elastic band, not caring if it looked messy. I put my brush back in my bag and quickly zipped it shut. I moved on the sleeping bag, I slowly rolled it up and stuffed it into its little carry bag and put it by Dyllan’s and my bag with the pillows.

Now I needed to deflate the mattress, I looked on the edges for the rubber plug and found it on the side where I had slept. I pulled the plug out and sat on it to get some air out. When all the air that my body weight could push out was gone, I rolled it slowly to get the rest of the air out and then I folded it up and placed it by the other luggage.

I took in a deep breath when I smelt a really good smell of fresh carp, I could hear the sizzling and popping of the fish as Dyllan cooked it and then I zipped down the tent door to get some more of the fresh scent. As I climbed out, the smell just washed over my face like an ocean current of waves. It was good.

I watched as the last few clouds blew away in the sky and then they revealed the sunlight. I looked straight to Dyllan as the rays hit his perfectly marble skin.

I could see his eyes narrowing through the glasses as he stood up.

    Hmm, he said uncomfortably.

He walked slowly to me and his lips pulled into a perfect smile.

You know, your skin makes this glow because it’s so pale, I said to him.

    He touched my cheek.

So does yours, he reminded me.

Yeah, but it looks beautiful on you, I said.

On me? he asked. A soulless monster? Not even the diamonds I get in my eyes seem beautiful. To me, it just means death.

His statement sent my mind through my memories, moving through each and everyone of them until it found the memories of when Dyllan’s eyes burned with furry and owned a diamond sparkle on the left of both pupils. I looked up to him and held his face between both my hands.

You’ve got to stop saying that, you’re not a monster, I said softly. You’re a beautiful creature, one that does wondrous abilities.

He slowly pulled my hands off his face and placed them on the small of his back. He slowly moved his hands around me and held me tight to his body. I could have stayed there forever and ever with no end, but that was until he let go. I stood completely still like my feet were glued to the floor as he walked to where he had been cooking. He pulled out one of the plastic plated from the cutlery sets and placed the fish in it. I forced my feet from their stuck positions and joined him on the log in the shade of the huge oak tree.

Here you go, special for you, he said with a soft smile. He handed me the plate with a fork and I tried it. It was good, I could taste it was defiantly fresh from where ever he had gotten it from.

This is really good, I said, Actually, its great for someone that doesn’t eat himself.

Hmm . . . lots of practice, he said.

A Century and a quarters worth, I said to him.

    Right, he said.

When I was finished, I washed my dishes and packed them into the cutlery bags whilst Dyllan put down the big tent. I took our luggage and slowly put the smallest bags inside the trunk of Dyllan’s Silver Mercedes. Just as I was about to pick up my suitcase of clothes, a pale hand picked it up and then the other picked up another one of the big bags and he put them in along with the tent bags. And lastly he pushed the trunk closed with a bang.

Shall we get going? I asked.

Only if you put your seatbelt on, he said and laughed. I smiled and walked towards the passenger side of his car. He opened it for me before I was even by the door and I smiled. As I climbed in, I looked to the replaced seat covers that were clean and had not one single drop of blood from that painful night that haunted my memories. But anyway, at least these ones were nicer and made the seat even more comfortable.

He closed the car door and then was on the other side, opening the door in the next second. I did as he joked and quickly clicked on the seatbelt. He did the same, but only faster and without a sound.

Are you sure that you still don’t want a car, how about a Jeep, a Mercedes Benz, a Single or Double cab or Sporty car? he asked as he started the car.

    No, not a chance! I don’t need a car, I assured him.

Well, you don’t exactly have a choice. Your Birthday is in two months, so I would pick if I were you.

Haven’t we had this discussion a million times? I asked softly.

Yes, and I’m prepared to have it a million more, he said.

Okay, if I pick one will you stop bugging me on this subject? I said annoyed.

    Maybe, he said.

Okay fine, then maybe I’d pick the Jeep, because most people I know already own the others.

Was that so hard? he said.

Yes, I said and slouched in my seat. He smiled and then he moved the gearshift into drive. He drove down the mountain slowly over the bumpy dirt path.

Oh I hate this path, I moaned.

Unfortunately, we’ll be on for about fifteen minutes, he said apologetically.

Ugh, I said and laid my head against the seat, I guess that I’m going to have to endure it, because it’s too early to take a nap. It was too early, but I kept my head down and closed my eyes. This was going to be a long fifteen minutes. Not even the most expensive gift in the world could make it seem better.

My neck was starting to cramp from all the bumping and moving. I felt like I could have just used a neck brace just to keep my head still. But that would have just made me feel silly.

I kept my eyes squeezed shut, but then they instantly flew open as the road became smooth. We were on a smooth dirt road now, and I could see the tar roads probably about eighty yards away.

Thank the halt, I don’t think my neck could have taken it anymore, I said thankfully.

Have you been around Warren too much? he said.

    I don’t know. Why?

He says that exact line when something goes better, he said.

    What? Thank the Halt?

    Yes, the exact words.

Oh, oops, I said laughing with him.

We finally reached the tar road. He turned left into the road and then the car picked up speed. I looked through the tinted windshield and then turned my head to look through the tinted window on my side. The trees just whooshed past the car with the branches moving in so many directions with leaves breaking off.

I placed my hand on the side of my seat. I felt Dyllan’s cold fingertips touch the top of my hand and then gently cupped his hand over mine. I looked to our hands and then he twined his fingers through mine. I smiled a soft smile and left my hand together with his under his smooth marble skin.

    2

    Home.

The trip was over soon enough. Dyllan slowed down the car in a familiar woodsy street and turned left onto a long driveway of white pebbles. The car moved slowly (Well slowly for Dyllan when we were going at sixty on the drive way) down the path until finally the house appeared out from the tall trees. The sight was the same, beautiful white house with the long row of white garages built behind it. The green grass of Courtney’s garden, the trees and flowers. As always, it still looked untouched and brand new.

Dyllan’s garage door opened to an empty spot and he parked in his car space. The cars engine went dead and he pulled up the emergency break.

Welcome home, he said and then unlocked the doors. He climbed out and slammed the door, but was at my side opening my door before I could even touch the door handle. I smiled and climbed out. He took my hand and walked to the trunk.

Wait right here for a few seconds. I want to quickly put away the camping things, he opened the trunk and pulled out all the camping things and then disappeared with them. I looked into the sky and watched the small little clouds move towards the west.

Okay, we can go to the house now, he said and pulled out the last two bags in one hand and he pulled me by the waist with the other.

    Where’s Kevin’s Ferrari? I asked.

He sold it, he and Courtney are now sharing a car, he answered. The garage door closed as we walked into the sun. In the corner of my eye I saw him block out the sun with his hand.

Hold on, he said and picked me up around my waist and then blew into a run. For those three seconds, the wind was wild and it blew my hair all the way behind me. He stopped at the black double doors of the house and then he set me on my feet.

He reached for the doorknob and slowly twisted it. The left door opened and then he did the same with the right side, and he pushed it open. He smiled as we walked through the door. He put the bags down by the wall and then turned to close the double doors together.

Hi Tanya, a soft little voice came from somewhere. I looked around for the voice but couldn’t find it.

Up here, she said again. Dyllan and I both looked up. She was sitting with a duster in her hand on one of the first floor support beams.

Sashalee, What are you doing? Dyllan said with a confused look on his face.

Oh, well Courtney noticed a bunch of cobwebs here this morning. So I’m just doing some spring-cleaning.

    You, you’re spring-cleaning? he said.

Yeah, Courtney’s doing upstairs, she said.

Okay then. I’ll leave you to it, he said.

Oh no, you don’t. Not without my hugs, she said. She leaned back and dropped herself off the beam, and with a soft little sound she landed on her toes. Her smile lit up and she slowly walked towards me.

How were the mountains? she said as she hugged me. I hope it was good, because you’ve been there for half of the entire summer.

It was wonderful, very peaceful, very romantic, I said to her. She smiled wider and turned to Dyllan.

Hope you had a lovely time, too? she said.

Oh but of course, he said and hugged her friendly.

Perfect, she happily said. Sebastian came out from the living room, followed by Warren.

    Wazup brother, Warren said.

How’s the vacation? Find any mountain lions? asked Sebastian. Dyllan smiled and high-fived both of them in their own brotherly way.

No, just dear, elk and grizzlies, Dyllan answered.

Awesome, he said and he held out his fist to Dyllan, and then he softly hit his knuckles against Sebastian’s.

Sebastian, can I have some help again, please, Sashalee said.

    Sure thing, he said.

Sebastian walked to her and picked her up. She sat on his shoulders, he held her hand and then she stood up on both feet. Sashalee easily lifted herself onto the beam. Sebastian threw the duster up to her and she caught it before it could even fly past her foot.

Thanks, she said and continued to dust up the cobwebs.

Dyllan picked up the bags again and pushed me toward the doorframe. I knew where to go and I just went as I hoped he followed. I didn’t want to cross Amy’s way by myself.

I walked slowly into the next room filled with art of all types that Sashalee had made. As I walked towards the stairs and looked the door in the next wall that was a second leading into the living room, then looked back to see if Dyllan was following before I climbed the stairs. He was still there.

As usual, all the curtains in the house were closed.

I climbed the shiny black wooden spiral staircase. Soon enough we got to the top and I walked straight forward to the two middle doors in the middle of the hallway and I opened the one on the left. I slowly walked in and Dyllan followed.

Hey Dyllan, I’m not done in her, Courtney laughed as she fell and then dangled from the support beam.

    Woops, I said.

Hey Courtney, so I guess Sashalee wasn’t kidding when she said spring-cleaning, he said as he laughed at her while she dangled, holding on with only on hand. Dyllan and I walked away from the door towards the bed so he could put the bags down.

Yeah, apparently there have been spiders between the beams and the high ceilings of the top floor. And also between the beams of downstairs, she let go and she gracefully landed on her toes. She walked towards me to hug me and then she pecked me on both cheeks.

I hope you two had fun on your vacation, she said as she hugged Dyllan and then pecked him on the lips.

Oh yes, the both of us, he said.

Wonderful, she said and gracefully walked out from the room. She closed the door with a soft bang and then opened the door next to Dyllan’s and my bedroom door.

    Hmm . . . Dyllan wondered.

    What? I asked.

She missed a spot, he whispered.

Where? I asked, looking around the room.

    The sofa, he whispered.

What do you mean? It’s not dusty and it’s in place, exactly a few centimeters from the wall like she always puts it.

    Not anymore, he said.

What? No! I said as he ran towards me. He ran with me in his arms and planked us both into the sofa, slightly hitting it against the wall with a big smack.

Whoa . . . whiplash, I said as he turned so I was on top of him.

"Yeah, I think that Courtney must come and reposition the sofa when we’re done.

With what? I asked and I narrowed my eyes at him.

He smiled and placed his cold hand on my cheek. His other hand moved from my back to my neck and he slowly pulled me down. His cold lips met mine and lined smoothly into its rightful place. His cold lips made mine feel slightly numb after twenty seconds, but I didn’t care. I could have kissed him forever with no end and still have time to do what ever without letting go. This kiss was all pleasure and no stress. Before anything could go wrong, he grabbed my right hand and held it to his chest. He probably realized that it was becoming loose. My left hand brushed along his hair a few times and then I slid it down to his cheek to keep his face close. His lips parted from mine for a few seconds so I could breathe. I took a few deep breaths and then I laid my head against his chest where he held my hand to. He let go of my hand and held his arms around me. He leaned his chin on the top of my head and he kissed me there. He brushed his fingers through my long hair and then gently twisted his fingers through it.

I wouldn’t actually mind falling asleep like this one night and then wake-up in the same position.

Okay, thirty minutes are up, I think we should call Courtney now, he said.

Aw, what a shame, I was getting comfy, I said and he leaned up, positioning me into his lap.

Oh don’t worry, we’ll do it again some other time, he whispered. I laughed and then got of his lap to stand up. He stood up too and put his arm around my shoulders the lead me towards his door.

So how about some Television? he said as he opened the door.

Hmm . . . I thought about it, If there is something interesting to watch.

Wonderful, he said. He closed the door behind us and then walked to the stairs. I took the first step with him and placed my hand on the shiny polished rail.

We walked to the living room in silence and then sat down on the black leather couches.

So where are Amy and Marcus? I asked curious, I still hadn’t seen them today. But I was still kind of scared to walk around
