You Are Magical - Tess Whitehurst
Acknowledgments
Preface
A month before I was born, my mom wrote me a letter. While she was going through old stuff a few years ago, she came across it and finally sent it to me.
Every time I read it, it makes me cry. Among many other beautiful things, it says:
There is so much I want to tell you from my little perch here in space and time. But I’m hoping and believing that what I’m inspired to write now will be what you need to be reading, not what I need to be writing.
Don’t be forgetting the magic. You know what I mean. If you don’t, you never did, but it’s easy to forget. So much magic, like you kicking me from within my body, like me communicating with you now across the years.
There is an infinite number of types of magic, and now there is even one more: your magic. I can’t tell you more, but you will know.
Even though I received the letter only recently, I like to think I have been successful at not forgetting the magic. In fact, you might say I’ve made it my life’s work to remember the magic, and to support other people in remembering it too.
Magic has always been a part of my life, but it was just over twenty years ago that I discovered it as a spiritual practice. Since my first book, Magical Housekeeping, came out in 2010, I have been publicly writing and teaching about magical living, as well as supporting clients through my intuitive counseling and feng shui work. Now, in this book, I share the fundamentals of living a magical life. It’s been shaped by the many questions and concerns I’ve heard from readers, clients, and students over the years, as well as all that I’ve learned along my own spiritual and magical path.
Considering you’ve found your way to this book, it’s likely that you’re like me, and have a stubborn sense that there is much more going on here than most people publicly discuss: invisible currents of energy, information, and interconnection that inform and define all things. There was a time when I found this sense most unsettling. It was like I was filled with ungrounded electricity, which I believe led to anxiety, depression, and the unwitting creation and maintenance of a host of undesirable life conditions. Discovering magic as a spiritual path provided the perfect remedy by showing me how to harness and channel my awareness of the subtle reality into harmony, healing, and the power to create positive change.
Since that time, my life has been systematically unfolding in more and more magical ways. I am constantly astonished by the relentless expansion of beauty in my world. Although I still encounter challenges, like everyone does, I see even these as opportunities to learn, grow, and expand into even deeper wisdom and power than ever before.
I would love for you to experience what I’m talking about firsthand.
That’s why I wrote this book for you: you who can no longer ignore the ancient, insistent, mesmerizing siren song of your intrinsic spiritual power. I wrote it for you who can sense that living magically is not a novelty act, a fashion, or a trend; it’s who you really are. Indeed, it’s your legacy and birthright as a beloved child of the universe. Welcome home.
To borrow the immortal words of my mother, I am pleased to be able to say:
"There is an infinite number of types of magic, and now there is even one more: your magic."

PART 1
Finding Your
Magic
1
Answering the Call
Ever since you were a child, magic has called to you.
Even when the grownups told you it was all just make-believe, you could never entirely dismiss the idea that power flows from your fingertips, your dreams carry messages from beyond, and maybe—just maybe—you can adjust, fine-tune, and craft your world to match your desires.
And that idea is still with you today. It may have been buried at times, but at its core it hasn’t faded.
What’s more, you feel a pulsating power and presence emanating from the natural world. It speaks to you—not necessarily through words, but through the beauty of a butterfly, the fragrance of fresh rain on dry ground, the sound of wind in the trees, the vast expanse of glittering stars, or the moment when the sun shines through rain to broadcast a rainbow.
Even if you’ve never consciously acknowledged this feeling, now that I’ve described it, you recognize it plainly. And it’s so profound that it’s actually spiritual.
But mainstream spirituality—organized or prescribed religion of any variety—has always let you down. Your experience of it has never come close to how transported you feel by your own personal relationship with nature and the cosmos.
Why is all that, do you think?
Well, I’ll tell you.
It’s because you are magical.
The Mystery Is Sacred
Some Native American tribes have a name for the divine presence that translates to the Great Mystery
or the Great Holy Mystery.
While the modern Western world may like a good mystery novel or unsolved crime story, it’s a different story with the Mystery with a capital M. Science and organized religion alike seem to believe it’s their mission to explain it all away, to tell us how they’re getting it all sorted out, figured out, and written down.
But in our heart of hearts, we know that the Mystery—that relentless why
at the innermost core of time, space, and existence—is what makes this life what it is. It’s a question that can never be answered and a wildness that can never be tamed. It won’t shrink itself to fit into the confines of our logical, linear minds. It hides in the tiniest particles, plunges to the deepest depths, and expands extravagantly across the infinite, glittering cosmos. And when we surrender to it and open up to it, our consciousness goes there too.
This is where your magic comes from. And, like the unfathomable depth and breadth of the Great Mystery itself, it’s perhaps what has made so many so uncomfortable about metaphysics and the supernatural for so long.
Everything Is Interconnected
While all our logic will never penetrate the heart of the Great Mystery, the fact remains that we and the Great Mystery are one. Relatively recent science describes the quantum interconnectedness of all things: the existence of everything as a unified field of energy. This means that while we are in the universe, the universe is also within us. There is no separation. While science is just beginning to have words for this, it’s something that spiritual and magical people have sensed since time immemorial.
In the story of Svetaketu in the Chandogya Upanishad (one of the ancient Sanskrit sacred texts), it is said: One unbounded ocean of consciousness became light, water, and matter. And the three became many. In this way the whole universe was created as an unbounded ocean of consciousness ever unfolding within itself.
Believe it or not, in the 2006 book Pride of India, the quantum mechanics pioneer Werner Heisenberg is quoted as saying, After the conversations about Indian philosophy, some of the ideas of quantum physics that had seemed so crazy suddenly made much more sense.
The classic magical text known as The Kybalion also foreshadowed the quantum perspective. In chapter 4 it states, [The All] must be infinite in space—it must be everywhere, for there is no place outside of the All.
So not only are we created by what the Kybalion calls the All,
but we are also made up of it: we are extensions of it. We contain it within us. Similarly, Erwin Schrödinger, the Austrian theoretical physicist famous for his contributions to quantum mechanics, writes in his book My View of the World that inconceivable as is seems to ordinary reason, you—and all other conscious beings as such—are all in all. Hence, this life of yours … is in a certain sense the whole.
Even the most limited understanding of our physical existence illustrates how much we rely on food, water, air, and other beings. Without these things, we literally would not exist. The genetic material of our parents, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe become us, as even our own atoms and molecules will inevitably become something else. Where and when does one end and the other begin? The answers, of course, are nowhere and never : there is no separation—no beginning and no end.
Clearly, you are one with the All, the power that creates and sustains worlds. That power is not separate from you. It belongs to you. It is you. And if magic is the power to create positive change according to your will and desires, well, then, there’s no denying it: you are magical.
You Are Magical
Once you recognize and admit that you are magical—that you are one with the vast power that creates everything—you’re empowered to wield your magic. It becomes possible to shape your world according to your will: to live the life and create the conditions you desire.
But magic’s first gift is its best gift, and that is simply the awareness that you have it, that it’s yours. In other words, through consciously connecting with the Great Mystery and allowing yourself to recognize your oneness with the unified field, your life instantly becomes animated with beauty, meaning, and wonder. Everything else—all the crafting and shaping of your life conditions according to your desires—is just (impossibly delicious) icing on the cake.
This book is about the cake and the icing: the luminous, wondrous, profound awareness of the Mystery and all the fun ways you can channel it into continuously creating the life of your dreams.
After all, you’re meant to live a magical life: a life filled with beauty, wonder, and power.
But you already knew that, didn’t you? You were born knowing. And it’s worth noting that all the anti-Mystery propaganda the world has offered you over the years—try as it might—has never quite succeeded in convincing you otherwise.
Your Magic Is Unique to You
Every musician’s music has its own unique expression and aesthetic signature. Your magic is no different. While all creativity and all magic come from the same unified field, just as everything does, the particular emanations—much like our fingerprints and DNA—are infinitely varied.
To make contact with your magic and to begin to familiarize yourself with its unique expression, ask yourself: What inspires me? What excites me? What connects me to the Mystery, to Mother Nature, to All That Is?
With this in mind, here are some journaling questions to help you open the door to your magical path:
1. What is your favorite flower, or what flowers are particularly beautiful and inspiring to you?
2. What is your favorite tree, or what trees are particularly beautiful and inspiring to you?
3. What is your favorite animal, or what animals are particularly beautiful and inspiring to you?
4. Why did you choose these flowers, trees, and animals? What emotions do you feel when you spend time with them, see them, or call them to mind? What messages do they give you? How might these messages and feelings be significant to your present life experience? What do they show you about yourself? Devote time and attention to each one individually.
5. What speaks to your sense of divine connection, or what most aligns you with a feeling of profound spiritual inspiration? It could be a particular god or goddess, an entire spiritual tradition, yoga, a story, crystals, a mythological creature, science, poetry, a country, a historical period, herbal healing, a specific scent or herb, an aspect of the earthly environment, the stars, space, or anything else. List as many as you like.
6. Why did you choose the answers you did for the previous question? What is it about these things that speaks to you, or what feelings do they give you? How might these feelings or qualities be significant to your present life experience? What do they show you about yourself? Take your time with each one.
While the following chapters will explore specifics about how to access and utilize your magic, it’s wonderful to begin by simply making contact with it: to appreciate it and revel in it for its own sake. And that which inspires you—which speaks to your sense of mystery and excitement—provides an instant portal to your expansive landscape of potent personal power.
In addition to acting as your very own guideposts to the Great Mystery and all the power and magic it contains, your answers to the previous questions provide clues to your life’s purpose as well as the unique magical objects, spell ingredients, symbols, and visualizations that will best serve your magical work, now and throughout your lifetime.
Do keep in mind that just as the seasons and weather change from month to month and year to year, that which inspires you, excites you, and connects you to the realm of the Divine will change regularly and throughout your lifetime. That’s part of what makes magic such a vibrant spiritual path: like nature itself, it asks us to stay awake to our ever-changing passion for and ever-deepening relationship with the world and universe around us.
In each chapter in part 1, you’ll find one or more exercises to help you integrate and experience what you’ve learned. Here is the first.
Your Magic
Answer the Call
My new awareness of the Goddess spilled over as a new awareness of trees and landscapes, so that what had seemed matter of fact and dull now began to vibrate with sentience. I would find myself staring up at a eucalyptus tree as if it were a lover, or looking out over a landscape with the feeling that it was alive and breathing.
~ sally kempton, awakening shakti
Now that you’ve connected with your magic, are you ready to answer the call?
• Turn off your phone and spend time alone in an inspiring, relaxing natural setting. This can be a park or nature trail, but it can also be your patio or yard, as long as it’s somewhere that inspires you and someplace where you can see plants and the sky.
• Do whatever you like: walk, sit on a tree stump, recline on the grass, gaze at a flower or tree, or watch the clouds. The important thing is that you are consciously present with the natural world around you.
• As you focus your awareness on the alive, conscious wisdom of nature, announce your commitment to answer the call: to live your authentic identity as a magic worker. You can speak your commitment aloud or think it silently. Either way, the Great Mystery and the entire natural world will hear
and understand the energy behind your words. Don’t worry about saying anything formal. Just speak the words that authentically bubble up from your belly and heart.
• Take some time afterward to listen deeply to the wisdom of the Mystery and the natural world. Do you see anything that sparks a deeper understanding? Does anything about the landscape stand out to you? Does any guidance
