    CHAPTER 1

The houses are huge! Giants must live here!

W INGOVER WENDOVER WAS PUZZLED. In fact he was downright confused… Timmy had driven such a long time and the old familiar bumps and curves he expected on the way out to his hunting grounds were replaced with long stretches of highway. Wendover was definitely going on a trip. Diego Maxamillion Jones—his trusty sidekick and all-around best friend and packrat—fretted as he saw all kinds of different-looking cars and trucks. The landscape had changed from orchards and cattle land to tall skyscrapers. The houses are huge! Giants must live here! They take up the whole sky. Timmy stopped the truck at a glaring red glow of a light. It is mesmerizing… all this color. D.J. noticed a large rat scampering down the street.

Hello, my name is D.J. He cleared his voice for a louder announcement. Diego Maximilian Jones… But he received no response. The rat seemed to have little interest in him. Everyone seems to be very busy here, Wendover.

Are there any trees, D.J.? asked the hooded Wendover.

Oh yes, lots of them… Suddenly D.J. saw a sparrow hawk perched in an elm tree above the light at which they were waiting. He called out to her. Oh Miss, may I ask you a question, please? She seemed to smile, and D.J. blushed and tried to continue. May I ask… what you call this very large place?

The little bird cocked her head and replied in the most beautiful French accent, But of course little rat, you are in San Francisco, si city by si bay.

D.J.’s heart skipped a beat, the light turned green, the little falcon swooped out of sight, and the truck was off again. D.J. choked a little from the exhaust. Wendover, she was French. A sparrow hawk that is French. I am in love!

Being the practical bird he was, Wendover replied, My good friend, please don’t forget… Think for a moment… What is a sparrow hawk’s main diet?

    D.J. answered, Rats and Mice.

Wendover continued, You must not forget the laws of nature, my friend. Even though Ria is a red-tailed hawk and our friend, you must never take chances that could put you in harm’s way.

D.J. thought for a second. You are very right, my smart friend. Maybe I should stick to cute rats.

Wendover finished, It would be safer.

After the long drive from Le Grand to San Francisco, Timmy finally pulled up into the driveway at his sister Gwen’s home. He got out of the truck and looked around the neighborhood. In the back of the truck, Roxy stood up and stretched in her carrier. Wendover roused and D.J. hid. Gwen and her husband Roger came out of the house and they all hugged and hugged. Timmy brought them over to the side window of the truck where Wendover was patiently waiting.

Here he is, Sis. This is Wingover Wendover!

Well, Wendover… I have heard so many good things about you. Wendover stood erect and tall, trying to look bigger than he actually was.
