Go on You Know You Want To! - Dee Mannix

    Chapter 1

SO FAR SO fast, it was just marvelous, she was still able to dive, and still able to glide to the surface when needed.

Approximately 30 feet from the surface she just hung there. Her arms floating by her side as if they had a life of their own with their gentle up and down rhythm.

Then a languid thrust to the surface to get a lungful of air and straight back down to a wonderful world where there was no gravity. She hung out there for a couple of minutes, all sound’s and motion had stopped, until she felt the unmistakable eddy in the water, which told her that there was another diver in her patch of ocean.

Then, before she had a chance to swivel around to investigate she felt an arm coming around her chest from behind. It crushed up against her breast’s grabbing her under her armpit. She was pulled back on to someone’s chest and at the same time felt the thrust of water as his legs were beating with hers against the flow of the water.

She knew it was a man from the power of the kicks and also she thought to herself, if it had been a woman she would have made eye contact before grabbing her. He was taking her to the surface, without checking if she wanted to go to the surface, so she surmised he could do all the work himself.

Anna had learnt thru experience not to make any sudden movements and to keep calm, it was the only way to survive underwater. She guessed that he must have thought she had passed out down there and he was only trying to save her life by pulling her to the surface, then with a splash they broke the surface. The next second she was making the universal divers signal to show that she was OK, her thumb and forefinger forming a circle. The arm which was around her loosened its grip and she was able to turn and face her would be rescuer.

She looked at him as he brushed the wet hair out of his eyes, it was difficult to decide what age he was, but then again, maybe 45, yes Anna thought he’s 45 if he was a day, he was tanned and had the deepest grey eyes that she had ever seen so she managed to give him a tight smile. When he spoke his voice shook with controlled anger. ‘You could have died down there. Don’t you know you definitely shouldn’t dive alone.

Anna was an expert diver and swimmer and was not willing to take lessons on diving safety from anyone.

‘First, It was free diving you might have noticed that I am not wearing a tank on my back. Second, I have been doing this for a long-time and I know what is and what is not safe and finally I have checked with the locals and they have assured me that this cove is safe. I didn’t hyperventilate, I am aware of how dangerous it can be, I am also aware of how easy it is to become unconscious when submerged.’ Her rescuer was still not convinced she was safe and said in his deep husky voice ‘when I saw you, you were just hanging there and you looked as if you were unconscious.’

She had to admit to herself that what he said could be true.

‘Sometimes I just like to relax for a few seconds and let the water do as it wishes with me, don’t you ever do that while you are diving?’

‘No I don’t, because we should never forget that we don’t belong under—water and that the water has all of the power.

‘I agree’ replied Anna reluctantly and then she realized that he wasn’t dressed for either swimming or diving. She could see the collar of a pale blue shirt and when she submerged her face she could see that he was wearing a pair of light blue denim pants but his feet were bare.

‘You thought I was in trouble and you dived in to help me, well I could have needed you, so thank you very much’.

‘Well I train quite a lot and I use this beach so I know what the currant’s here are like and every so often we get a bad one’ he said and with that Anna nodded her head in acknowledgment and headed back to the shore.

She hadn’t got far when her rescuer overtook her and this was despite the fact that she was wearing fins. He had told her that he trained quite a lot and he was definitely telling the truth.

At the edge of the shore Anna lifted up one leg in an effort to remove her fin and she started to sway slightly. So he came to her side and placed his right arm firmly around her shoulder in order to steady her. It worked and in two shakes she had both fins off.

As they walked up the beach Anna watched him cross his arms and pull his wet shirt up over his head and proceed to wring it out. She blinked twice when she saw the ripple of muscles across his chest, shoulders and arms. As a doctor she had seen the bodies of fine men but she had to admit that her wanna be rescuer could hold his own with the finest of them.

He was looking at her as they headed up the beach, and she noticed his dark, deep, penetrating grey eyes, they gave his face a genuinely lovely soft yet intriguing look.

    Dr. Anna Metcalfe?’

Anna looked questioningly at him, ‘how do you know my name?’ ‘I came out here to find you’.

Anna looked around the deserted beach and couldn’t help feeling a thrill all the way down her spine.

Two hours before she had been turning off the main road to Dingle and heading for the sea, for the small port of Emlagh West. She had stopped her car at the top of the hill, from where she had a fine view down to the small port. She stepped out of the car and for the first time in a long time she smelt the sea air and it was so good. She had been in the car for quite a while and had begun to feel hot and sticky, but now with the sea air all around her she felt invigorated and for the first time in a good long time, she was glad to be alive and back here where she had always felt more alive and at peace with herself and the universe.

She had known that she needed to get out of the city and away from the hospital.

Away from hospital smells and noises and also, away from where everyone knew who she was and knew all about the tragedy she had lived thru just eighteen months ago.

During the previous three years, she had worked as an A and E doctor in a very busy department.

Then midway thru Brian her husband of five years had died of Pancreatic cancer.

Anna had nursed him herself for the last two weeks as she knew how difficult he was finding it having nurses, some of whom he had known socially deal with the more personal bodily functions.

Now she needed a new start and a new life. She looked down at the port she used to know so well. Next to the pier and moored by two buoys Anna could see a converted trawler, which she guessed was the ‘Mary—Clare’. It was to be her workplace for the next two months, and she assumed would also be her home for some nights during this time. She had two days before she was due to report for duty on the ‘Mary Clare’. So Anna had booked herself into the best hotel in the town. She would spend those two days wandering around, introducing herself to the locals and it would be fun finding out if any of them recognized her and remembered her from her visits there, some years previous.

Already she felt that her sojourn here would be the balm she so desperately needed for her broken heart. Anna sat back into her car and drove down into ‘Emlagh West’ to start the next chapter of her life. She had booked a room in the ‘Teach Mor’ hotel, her room was situated at the front of the hotel, with a writing table and chair conveniently placed in the bay.

    Chapter 2

SHE PLACED THE few photos that she had brought with her of Jeremy, her brother and his family and of herself with her dad before his illness took its toll on the table along with her notebook computer. Then she sat down and logged on to check her email, her brother who was her only sibling usually emailed her on a daily basis with all of the trivia going on in her niece’s lives and this had become on some days three times a day, since she had told him of her plans.

Jeremy lived in the southeast of France with his French wife ‘Isabelle’ and their two delectable young daughters Marie-Rose and Sophie. No email’s since she had left that morning.

She sat there for a short while just gazing out the window at the lovely vista of the walkway, the pier and the inviting blue/green ocean. After a few minutes of contemplation she decided she had to go for a swim.

‘Ok, walk approximately half a mile south along the beach and you will come to a rocky cove which is perfect for swimming and diving’ Raymond the hotel owner, told her.

‘Also, if you come across any lobster’s or crab’s bring them back with you and I will cook them for you this evening’ he said with a wink.

‘I was here years ago’ Anna told him, ‘but I don’t remember that cove, I assume that it’s safe?’

‘Oh yes, it is one of the safest around these parts. I used to be a fisherman in these waters and I know all the good, the bad and the dangerous spots and that cove is just grand’, Raymond said while vigorously nodding his head in agreement with himself.

‘I’m a qualified diver and I’m going to be the doctor for the divers on the ‘Mary-Clare’ Anna told him.

‘Well, if that’s the case you should know what you are doing and that’s good enough for me.’

She returned to her room and began to pack a bag, she put in her dry suit, fins and a mask, when she had everything she needed she headed off.

As soon as she hit the sand she kicked off her sandals and put them in her bag.

It felt good having the sand between her toes, it had been a long time since she had felt so at peace. She was actually looking forward to her swim and maybe a sort of dive in the rocky cove.

She was starting a new chapter of her life and she honestly felt good about it.

All of this had happened earlier in the day and now she still needed an answer to her question as to how he knew her name, and also how he knew that she would be at that particular cove.

‘Again how do you know my name and who are you?’

This was answered with a genuine smile, which made her feel as if he was actually an old friend.

At that moment they were walking close to some large boulders, so he stopped and spread out his damp shirt on top of one of them so that it might dry out a bit more.

Even with that gesture Anna relaxed a bit more and her apprehensions vanished.

‘Liam O’Sullivan at your service, Raymond at the hotel told me that you would be here. He thought that I might want to talk to you and he was right, I do’.

‘Ok! You want to talk to me! Anna said with a quizzical tone in her voice.

He moved towards her and offered his hand.

‘You see Dr. Metcalfe, we are going to be working together, I’m the dive master on the ‘Mary—Clare’.

Now this was unexpected, Anna took the proffered hand. He had a firm, strong grip, which Anna liked.

She had met plenty of men who liked to assert their masculinity by squeezing so hard, you thought all life would have left your hand for good by the time you got it back.

Liam O’Sullivan was not one of those men.

‘I am sorry if I shocked you when I grabbed you but you must understand that all of us dive-masters have a tendency to become somewhat neurotic about safety.’

That was the moment when it struck her that she was standing chatting with a half naked, very fit man while only wearing a wet bathing suit, in a deserted cove, it sounded like something out of a romance novel.

By now they had reached his shoe’s and her towel and small pile of clothes. She picked up the towel and tossed it to him ‘Here you can try and dry yourself off, if you want’.

He shrugged his shoulders and tossed the towel back to her with a smile. ‘I’ll drip dry, the sun is warm enough, but if you get dressed we’ll walk back to the
