TABLE OF CONTENTS
1 An unfortunate experiment
2017 A.D.
System Undamaan owned by an alien species,
940 light years away from Earth
Ixtli, one of the two continents of Planet Undamaan
There were only two employees in the hotel’s reception office at that late hour. One was a male and the other a female of the same humanoid alien species. The males of this species had variegated marbled skin with nuances of forest green and big violet eyes, and the females had a sapphire blue color and shiny, topaz-like eyes. They had already worked continuously for fifteen Earth days and were due for a break, but the employees for the next shift could arrive only after the terrible snow storm ceased. When the aliens observed the lift moving to the ground floor, they rushed from their high-tech office. The two aliens approached the precious polished wood front desk that was filled with various objects. All of the aliens who saw them thought that these objects should be in a museum of history for common people. Only a millionaire from Earth could afford such luxuries as these.
A human emerged from the lift carrying a heavy backpack. The man wore an earflap cap and a long, synthetic fur jacket over a plain shirt and jeans. He was sweating profusely, but that was all that he could afford to buy from the colony's bazaar. The two alien employees looked at each other and giggled.
Good evening!
the man said joyfully. Oh! I almost forgot.
He mimicked the salute the club’s bartender had given him when he had stopped by there earlier.
Greetings... Adam!
the alien male read from a discreetly camouflaged display. How may I help you?
The tour company the aliens worked for did not allow them to use advanced technology in front of the customers to preserve an authentic experience. Adam approached the front desk, searching for a bell, but found none. He was disappointed, so he asked, Where is it?
What are you looking for, sir?
the alien woman asked Adam.
You know... That thing that sounds when you hit it.
I am sorry,
the confused alien asked, but I don't know what you are talking about. Can you give me more details?
Never mind.
Adam told her. It was just a desk bell.
Puzzled, the alien woman looked at the display, but she found no equivalent for 'desk bell' in the database. The AI that ran the compound used this display to interactively communicate with the employees. Her colleague became agitated too.
I am really sorry sir, but we don't have one yet. For suggestions and complaints please fill out our questionnaire, when you will reach the spaceport,
the alien woman said, observing the disappointment on Adam's face.
Okay. I'll do it,
Adam responded. He was lying because he didn't have any intention to waste his time helping some random bureaucrats from this planet improve their search engines. The aliens would only have sold this data to advertisers to gain more profit. Adam also noticed that the female alien should have said ‘when you have reached the spaceport’. He wasn’t sure if something was wrong with his universal translator, or if this alien was having trouble speaking in a way that was translatable. He’d come across this problem often enough by now that it didn’t really bother him anymore.
Adam produced a card from the rear pocket of his jeans and put it on the desk. I'm leaving today,
he announced.
All right, then. Let me do the math, sir?
the alien male asked.
Okay. Please hurry up!
Adam said.
The alien male glimpsed in the database and found that Adam had previously declared that he was using the decimal number system. The alien sighed in despair as he struggled to convert the amount that hotel's computer indicated. His species had decided a long time ago to use surreal numbers in order to grasp mathematics. The company the aliens worked for did the same. The surreal numbers are a universal ordered field in the sense that all other ordered fields, such as the rationals, the reals and many other numbers, can be realized as subfields of the surreals.
You owe us 1.06873022 Alliance Doubloons,
the alien male said after a couple minutes.
Hmm... I see your prices have skyrocketed since the last time I was here,
Adam said, disgruntled.
The aliens didn't comment on Adam's words. They only smiled at him. Smiling was without any social importance in their world. They did so anyway, because all employees took a course on xeno-behaviour before they were hired by the company that owned the hotel.
Well, what are you waiting for? Use my card, damn it! I don't want to waste my whole day because of you,
Adam spurred them.
The alien male squinted at Adam. Squinting and frowning were expressions common to both species. ‘This is another lazy customer’, the alien thought, smiling broadly with false goodwill. Nevertheless, he took the card then touched it on the POS. ‘Your mama was an ugly creature, Adam. Sir!’
Hey, stop it!
the alien woman warned her colleague telepathically. "Do you want to lose your job? Have you forgotten that we are monitored constantly?"
