About this ebook

This is a comprehensive bibliography of publications relating to Czechs in America, from the earliest time since the discovery of the New World to date, covering their settlement, community life and their contributions to their host country. Although emphasis is on English titles, including books, as well as articles, the relevant titles in Czech language have also been included, particularly in those areas where there is a paucity of English titles. English translations of the Czech titles were normally placed in parentheses. To assure maximum utility, the bibliography has been organized and classified into specific sectors by subject. Under most major headings, general surveys are listed first, followed by more specific categories, which have, in turn, been subdivided into subcategories. Individual entries in all sections are arranged chronologically. Under most subject areas separate biographical sections were added, comprising individuals of note in the respective fields. Apart from providing information on just about every aspect of human endeavor, it is hoped that it will induce serious students and scholars to do more work in areas that have not been adequately researched.

    FOREWORD

The Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) is proud to introduce Czech American Bibliography by Miloslav Rechcígl, Jr. The author requires no introduction. For the last twenty-five years, he authored several titles which serve as a valuable resource to serious students of Czech Americana and he served for many years as President of SVU. This publication is a truly comprehensive bibliography. It is well organized and classified by subject and, above all, it is easy to follow.

Dr. Rechcígl devoted his time to assemble objective information on notable Americans with Czech or Czechoslovak roots and compiled several directories of scholars and cultural figures of Czech descent in America. At numerous meetings of the Society of Arts and Sciences we have been reminded of the contributions people of Czech heritage have made to America and world culture. This meritorious activity will help present and future scholars to develop this area of research and fill in the gaps that still exist.

The relevance of this bibliography is enhanced further by recent plans of the Czech government and Parliament to broaden and expand relations with their countrymen throughout the world.

    PREFACE

A few years ago this author published a brief tentative listing of selected English publications relating to Czechs in America. The present publication, which is generally based on this, has been updated and greatly expanded to make it a truly comprehensive bibliography. It also incorporates and updates the relevant publications in the classical Esther Jerabek’s bibliography on Czechs and Slovaks in North America (1976). Since Silesia was an integral part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, for at least 400 hundred years, until 1742, when it was lost to Prussians, during the reign of the Empress Marie Theresa, the Silesian immigrants from that period have been included with the early immigrants from the Czech Lands.

Although emphasis is on English titles, including books, as well as articles, the relevant titles in Czech language have also been included, particularly in those areas where there is a paucity of English titles. Inasmuch as the now defunct Czech-American periodical Amerikán, Národní kalendář is such a splendid source of Czech Americana, a special effort was made to list many of its articles in the relevant sections of this bibliography. English translations of the Czech titles were normally placed in parentheses. In a few cases, important titles in other languages were also included, as were a few significant websites.

In addition to individual books and articles, a number of relevant chapters from anthologies and other books have also been listed separately, to assure that all important subjects are covered. The criterion for selection was the usefulness for the study of Czech-American immigration and ethnic history and the overall quality of the publication.

To assure maximum utility, the bibliography has been organized and classified into specific sectors by subject. Under most major headings, general surveys are listed first, followed by more specific categories, which have, in turn, been subdivided into subcategories, etc. Individual entries in all sections are arranged chronologically. In cases where a given publication fits in more than one category, or subcategory, it was normally placed where it fitted most. However, in a few instances, when it seemed appropriate, it is listed it several places. It should be noted that under most subject areas separate biographical sections were added, comprising individuals of note in the respective fields. Considering the increased interest among Czech Americans in their ancestors was the basis for also including a separate section on genealogy.

Compared to the US, there is much less information available about Czechs in Canada and in Latin America and, in the latter case the preponderance of the existing publications is in Spanish. Inasmuch as this bibliography encompasses the entire America, the pertinent publications relating to these areas are listed in separate sections as Appendices.

I am indebted to the kindly counsel of a number scholars, who read parts of the bibliography, or the entire manuscript, including Ambassador Petr Kolář, Prof. Jaroslav Pánek, Prof. Vladimír Papoušek, Prof. Ivo Barteček, Dr. Zdeněk Uherek, Dr. Ivan Dubovický, Dr. Milena Secká, Dr. Stanislav Brouček, Dr. Oldřich Tůma, Dr. Zdeněk David, Prof. Clinton Machann and Prof. David Chroust. I would also like to express my appreciation to my wife Eva, who painstakingly proofread it page by page and to Jiří Eichler for his help with the index.

This bibliography is a must for every student and scholar, as well as interested layman of Czech American immigration and cultural history. Apart from providing information on just about every aspect of human endeavor that has bearing on the subject, it is hoped that it will induce serious researchers to do more work in areas that have not been adequately investigated, some information being located only in obscure or inaccessible magazines, while other areas as still in the phase of terra incognita or ‘statu nascendi.’
