Introduction
In Ayad Akhtar's Pulitzer Prize–winning play Disgraced, a dinner party involving four successful New Yorkers becomes a tangled nightmare of deceit and anger. The four characters exemplify the harsh reality of the American dream: Amir, a powerful corporate lawyer who keeps his true identity as a Pakistani American a secret from his Jewish bosses; Emily, an idealistic artist whose naiveté is tied to her privilege as an attractive, white woman from a wealthy background; Isaac, a Jewish art curator who manipulates Amir's inner conflict to his own gain with Emily; and Jory, an African American lawyer who raised herself from poverty to become a partner at a law firm through an uncompromising belief in order over emotion. Before the end of the meal, the characters are engaged in a brutal debate that ends in catastrophe. Disgraced won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was nominated for the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play.
