Stop Kiss
Diana Son
1998
Introduction
Diana Son's Stop Kiss, first produced in 1998, tells the story of two women in New York City who fall unexpectedly in love. Callie, a traffic reporter without much direction in life, meets Sara, a bright-eyed newcomer to the city, through a friend of a friend when she agrees to watch Sara's cat. In the months that follow, the women find themselves enamored of each other—though they do their best to fight the current of attraction that pulls them closer. The scenes of this developing romance are interspersed with the aftermath, months later, of their first kiss, which was interrupted by a vicious attack from a homophobic stranger. As Sara lies in a coma, Callie is left alone to deal with the interference of Sara's disapproving family and her own confused emotions. Stop Kiss explores love and violence in New York City, as Callie chooses between a safe but listless life and the danger of giving her heart away for good.
