When Giving Is All We Have
Alberto Ríos
2015
Introduction
Alberto Ríos's When Giving Is All We Have,
published in his thirteenth collection of poetry, A Small Story about the Sky (2015), explores the act of giving. Giving is not defined in binary terms, as in giving and receiving, but in terms of creation: through giving, both parties create something new and better—whether a stronger relationship, a lasting memory, or a moment of healing. Ríos considers giving a part of human behavior, carried out across time, space, and cultures. The poem, organized into couplets, maintains simple language and down-to-earth imagery in its celebration of this universal aspect of life. Ríos, a poet born on the border between the United States and Mexico and named the first poet laureate of Arizona, reminds his readers that it is always more rewarding to give, as one river lends its water to the next, than to take, drying up the riverbed in senseless selfishness.
Author Biography
Ríos was born on September 18, 1952, in Nogales, Arizona, near the border of the United States and Mexico. Though he was raised in a Spanish-speaking household, he was forced to speak English at school, leading him to develop an interest in language from an early age. He attended the University of Arizona, earning his bachelor's degree in 1974 and his master of fine arts degree in 1979. His first chapbook, Elk Heads on the Wall, was published that year, followed by Sleeping on Fists (1981), Whispering to Fool the Wind (1982), and his first collection of short stories, The Iguana
