ELYSE BANGS HER MUG of tea on the table, causing the dregs to slosh around inside. As the host of this little gathering, I’d like to officially bring this meeting to order.

There isn’t enough left in the cup to overflow, but a worried look crosses Li Min’s face. Careful. I’m the one who has to wipe these tables, y’know.

I don’t have a gavel, Elyse says, as if that explains everything.

Li Min raises an eyebrow. They shift their weight, folding their arms over their brown work smock. Also, technically I’m the host? I’m the one who works here.

And I’m Izzy’s best friend. If our goal is to plan the perfect surprise party, I should be in charge.

I share a look with Colin, who’s sitting to my right. He seems amused, judging from his grin. When you told me we were meeting Elyse for coffee, you didn’t mention the free show.

I elbow him lightly in the ribs, but it’s too late. Elyse and Li Min both glare at him.
