Chapter One
Monday
It all started on a Monday when our teacher, Mrs. Trill, made an announcement to the class.
Well, she tried to, but it always took a minute for us to settle down. That day was no different. After all, we hadn’t seen each other for two whole days. Everyone buzzed about the room like bees, or flies, or some other kind of insect with wings. We could hardly keep still.
But that’s not unusual either. We all tended to act like the classroom was our social club, and that went double for me. Like most mornings, I made my rounds before our teacher made us all sit down.
Everyone, sit down quickly,
said Mrs. Trill.
I darted to my chair. Then, after the class finally got quiet, she told us, The Book Fair starts today.
But, somehow, we already knew.
O-M-G! Those posters are everywhere,
I said with a smirk.
Mrs. Trill looked at me and then went on. Soon, Sammy and I started chatting again in whispers. Our desks faced each other.
Lil’ Phyllis,
Sammy said as he leaned forward. I know you don't care about the fair, but I think it's cool. Just think of all those —

a fuzzy sounding voice broke in over the big speaker. Teachers, just a reminder about the Book Fair Raffle. We start selling the tickets today. Thank you.
Sounds of glee from my classmates filled the room.
Book Fair Raffle!
What’s that?
Prizes!
You mean you’ve never heard of a raffle before?
Yep, I’m winning!
Wow, better than last year’s Book Fair!
Okay, okay, everyone. That is the other thing I wanted to tell you all about,
said Mrs. Trill.
Yes!
exclaimed Sammy. Just think of all the cool new stuff to see at the Book Fair.
Not!
I said. Every year, the Book Fair comes around like a hurricane and floods the school with useless stuff.
Tammy, of course, had to chime in, I like the cool new books!
Books?! No, not the books,
Barry broke in. The other stuff, like the colorful pencils and erasers.
But who cares about a stupid book fair anyway?!
I said.
They all looked at each other, like what the! and turned around to face Mrs. Trill as she pointed to the date on the white board.
Most of my classmates did not feel the same way I did. They mostly thought books were fun. I thought they were fun too, before. That was when my dad and I used to pick a book to read together every night before my bed time.
Now, that all had changed for me. I didn’t know exactly why. But it didn’t help that I read so slow.
I didn’t want to talk about books, book fairs, or read any books anymore. For me, reading was quickly becoming very scary. But somehow, I’d have
