    Prologue

Jacob Mulkryne looked out the window of his remote, hidden castle that sat on the edge of Lake Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba, Canada. It was a cold, dark night, December the seventeenth. The lake was almost frozen as the temperature neared the low twenties. Even though it was past midnight, the full moon cast its rays down upon the lake, lighting it up with a glare in the dark night that reflected and shined through the large window of his study. Mulkryne drank a fine red wine in a tall crystal glass; it had been nearly two months now since that horrific and bloody night of Halloween, in the small upstate town of Malapaso, New York.

The homicide detective Marc Collins, along with Shannon Medford and many others, were able to save Kathy Westscott from her father, Lucas, who was going to sacrifice her for the cult’s Black Mass so that Lucas could gain the rightful power from his daughter and lead the eastern colony. Mulkryne remembered how it was cast all over the news and papers, reaching even here in Canada. The papers detailed how Detective Collins and his investigators linked the murders of young females dating back a decade and pieced it all together for the ceremony of the Black Mass. Mulkryne clenched his teeth together in anger as he thought about how Marc and his friends killed Lucas and his top aide, Silas Marsh. Mulkryne then felt the embarrassment of not only losing the first colony he found himself so many years ago for Satan. Even though Lucas was able to draw the blood from Kathy and bless it, in order for Mulkryne to drink the blood of the females to prolong his life force (as part of the sacred pact he had made with Satan four hundred years ago), Lucas was unable to sacrifice Kathy to complete the holy ceremony for the Black Mass, and she was saved by Marc Collins.

Mulkryne cursed as he turned around and threw the glass against the far wall of the study and watched it shatter into many pieces. He fixed his eyes on the large, dark painting of Satan hanging on the wall. Mulkryne stared into his eyes and asked for forgiveness, and he swore he would reclaim the one colony he had found so long ago. He would follow through with sacrificing Kathy Westscott, in exchange for forgiveness from Satan for losing the colony. He swore vengeance upon those who stopped Lucas and the loss of his art company, which he used as a front to hide all his followers.

There was a knock on the thick, wooden door, and it opened inward slowly as a very attractive female peered in. She was about five feet nine inches tall with straight black hair that fell to her shoulders. As she moved slowly inside the study, she looked at Mulkryne with her dark brown eyes before speaking softly. Father, are you all right?

Mulkryne looked into her eyes, and a smile broke on his face as he responded to her. Christina, please come in my, dear. As Christina walked in the study, a tall man came running to the door; it was Frederick Lindros, the top aide to Mulkryne. He too asked Mulkryne if everything was fine.

Please, both of you come in, and lock the door, Frederick, Mulkryne instructed as Lindros locked the door. Mulkryne then asked for them to sit down at the large wooden table in his study. He wanted to tell them why he was so angered at this moment. Christina and Lindros sat down across from one another, waiting for him to give his instructions.

It has been two months now since Lucas and Silas were killed and Katherine was saved by the detective. I need that girl back in our power so she can be properly sacrificed—not only to complete the ceremony of the Black Mass, but as my soul gift to our lord for our failure for losing the eastern colony, Mulkryne said with a very cold tone in his voice. Most of the blame falls upon Lucas for not being more cautious and keeping ourselves hidden from the outside world, but he is not the only one to blame for this huge failure. I first want to have a meeting with the heads of the other two colonies at our mansion in Needham, Massachusetts.

Of course, my lord. I will contact Everett Masters and Angela Kalstine and have them meet us with their aides soon at the mansion, Lindros answered.

Frederick, I not only want to confront those in our circle who failed us, I also want the ones who stopped us and killed Lucas dead—starting with Marc and his family!

Christina looked down and thought to herself before saying, Father, from what our followers have told us, Marc is about to marry Shannon this coming weekend in Plattsburgh.

Mulkryne gave a small, wicked smile. "We will let them enjoy their newfound happiness for now, as we will need time to plan this carefully. I want no mistakes made this time. Frederick, I want the meeting to be held this Saturday, late at night.

Lindros assured Mulkryne he would make all the necessary arrangements to have all their key members in place for the secret meeting to be held.

Mulkryne would not tolerate failure this time from their followers, and he would unleash his wrath of vengeance upon Marc and his friends. Many lives were about to end, and very soon.

    Chapter 1

It was just past noon on Saturday the eighteenth of December, and Nicole Symms was waiting for her father in his town hall office. She had asked to meet him for lunch so she could tell him her good news. Just then her father, the mayor of Malapaso, came into his office, greeted Nicole with a kissed her on her forehead, and asked her where she would like have lunch. She told him the Royal Coach diner, and she mentioned she had some big news to tell him. Mike assumed it was news about her job; she was a reporter for the town’s local paper, the Herald News.

As they entered the diner and were seated at a booth together, Mike asked, So what’s the big news you have to tell me, Nicole?

I got an exclusive interview with Marc and Shannon, along with Kathy, to talk about their experiences the bloody night of Halloween, and how Marc and Shannon pieced it all together in time to save Kathy.

Mike looked into Nicole’s deep green eyes and was surprised by the news, but he gave her a smile. Honey, please, I know you helped Marc with his investigation, getting him information on Lucas Westscott and his company that tied him to this cult thing. I just feel you should let another news outlet cover the story. I know it will get us a lot of media attention here in Malapaso, but I just don’t want to see you marred by criticism by others in the business . He sighed and held her hand. I guess I am just being an overprotective father.

Dad, I can handle it. Ever since I became a reporter, I have been waiting for that one story to get me noticed and also bring a lot of attention to Malapaso. Besides, I have already scheduled the interview with them: when they return from their honeymoon after Christmas.

Mike was shocked by the news. Their getting married?

Yes, today in fact, at Saint John’s in Plattsburgh; just family and some close friends are going. Marc wanted to have a small wedding and keep it as quiet as possible, which is why I didn’t cover it in the paper—in order to get the sit-down interview.

Mike knew he couldn’t change her mind but also knew his superiors would not be pleased by this news. Then his cell phone went off, and he looked at the number on the screen. Mike recognized the number and told Nicole he needed to take this call; he walked to the back of the restaurant to be alone.

Yes, Father Epps, Mike said softly into the phone.

Michael, we need to meet at the mansion in Needham with our superiors late tonight. Come pick me up at the church at nine . Give your staff and your daughter a good excuse as to why you will be out of town this weekend, Father Frank Epps informed Symms before hanging up.

Hey sweetie, that was the office that just called me. I need to go to Plattsburgh and meet with Mayor Jackson about some issues coming up. I need to get going now—I’m sorry about lunch, he told Nicole.

No, it’s all right, Dad, I understand.

Well, look, good luck on the story with Marc and Shannon, and I am very happy for you. Just please be careful, Nicole—the outside world is very dangerous. He kissed her on the cheek and left the restaurant.

Nicole was puzzled by what her father told her, and she wondered if he was all right.

It was just past 9:00 PM as mayor Symms pulled up to the back of the rectory of Saint Joseph’s Church with his driver. Father Frank Epps exited out the door and walked quickly to the four-door Lexus. As they headed out, Symms informed Epps of the interview Nicole was to have with Marc. Epps frowned and told Mike he needed to tell their superiors of this news, and Symms reluctantly agreed with him. As they reached Plattsburgh Airport around 10:15, their car drove onto the tarmac and right up to the jet plane. Symms noticed the large jet plane and knew it was one of the planes belonging to Silas Marsh’s law firm. As they boarded the plane, the pilot informed them they would be landing at Logan Airport a little after midnight, and a car would be there waiting to take them to Needham, Massachusetts.

When the plane landed around 12:15 AM, a black Lincoln LS waited for them, and the driver told the men to hurry because they had to make the drive in good time, through the suburbs of Boston. As they entered the upscale suburb of Needham, it was now almost 1:30. Symms looked up at the large mansion as the car pulled up to the front drive. They both noticed many black luxury vehicles parked out front. Black was the symbolic color of all the colonies, to show fear in all those who oppose them but also to hide their existence from the outside world. Symms noticed a very large black Maybach 62. He knew now that Mulkryne himself must be present at the meeting. As they were greeted at the door by two men in fine black suits, one of the men instructed the men that the meeting was being held on the main floor in the back conference room.

Both men left their bags in the foyer and made their way to the large conference room; two more men in fine black suits opened the large doors for them, and one showed them inside. Seated at the large oval wooden table were ten people. Among them were Everett Masters and Angela Kalstine. Masters was the head of the Midwestern colony in Omaha, Nebraska, and Kalstine was the head of the western colony in San Francisco. Kalstine was the first female to head a colony of her own, as her own daughter was sacrificed for her to gain power.

The rest of the aides greeted Epps and Symms, and one of the men guided them to the last two empty seat next to one another. On the table in front of each member were cups for coffee and water, with large pitchers of each. Also placed in front of each member was a folder containing 8×10 pictures and a few information files. Angela Kalstine instructed them not to open files just yet.

The doors opened as Lindros and Christina walked into the room. Lindros told all of them, Thank you for coming on such short notice, but this meeting was needed for what has transpired in the last two months, with the events in Malapaso. Then the door opened again, and Jacob Mulkryne walked slowly into the room. All the members at once rose from their seats and greeted him, calling him their one true living lord.

Mulkryne walked with the ease of a man still in great shape, especially for his age of four hundred years old, but he maintained the appearance of a man maybe in his early sixties. His white hair was cut short and parted on the right side. He wore a fine wool black suit, and as he walked to the head of the table he greeted all his members and told them to sit down. Lindros and Christina sat behind him, away from the table.

"My thanks to all of you for coming and making long journeys to our sacred state of Massachusetts, the state where I came to settle so long ago, and started our worship, and began our first colony here in the east. But now it has been lost—we have been exposed because of the events in a small town in New York, which has led to the FBI arresting all our members in Boston and New York City and putting an end to both Simon Nash’s art company and Roger Dalton’s real estate company, not to mention the loss of many people.

Please open your folders and take out first the information of the key people we lost. On the first sheet are the names of members that were killed; on the second sheet are the names of members who are now in federal custody.

The seated members read the names that are dead; Lucas Westscott, Silas Marsh, and Simon Nash were the key people highlighted. As Symms looked up at Mulkryne, who just stared back. Mulkryne then instructed them all to take out the pictures, which were of Kathy Westscott, Marc Collins, and Shannon Medford. Mulkryne then asked Christina to inform the members about the people are in the pictures.

This is the man most responsible for finding us out; his name is Marc Collins, the homicide policeman of Malapaso, she said. He began investigating the murders
