"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

    Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV)

A note to my brothers and sisters:

The book you are now holding began as a text message on my Blackberry. Thirty minutes and thirty characters later I copied it over to a Facebook note and spent the next thirty days or so on my World Edition (Facebook App), thumbs banging away.

I think my wife Lisa and the kids thought I was insane, only half believing that I was actually texting a letter. I admit I was possessed–obsessed! I spent every free moment chipping away at what you now hold in your hand.

The obsession to write this down came after a long distance phone conversation with my brother. We were talking about our childhood, how far life had taken us from that simpler time, and how the present Great Recession was wreaking havoc in our lives.

Near the end of our talk I remarked that I was glad that at least God was in control and that we could be at peace. That remark led to a recollection of our childhood religion in the Roman Catholic Church and culminated in a recounting of my near death experience which led to a discussion concerning the difference between having a religion with God and having a relationship with God". There is a difference.

After we hung up I felt that it didn’t end so well. I was troubled. I said to Lisa, "I feel like I just let my brother down; I think he thinks, that I think, that I am holier-than-thou or loftier in some sanctimonious way".

That was the last thing I thought about myselfand certainly the last thing I wanted him to think! I just couldn’t leave him with the notion that I felt I had any edge in the working my way up to heaven department.
