Tired Tubblewood Creek
Miss Duck opened the window shutters to let the sunshine of a bright June morning enter her house. She liked to begin every day with giving her house a quick polish and shine. She always kept her house neat and tidy. She also liked spending every morning in her garden. Miss Duck thought that flowers helped make every day special.
She had just sat at the table to rest and have a cup of lemon tea when she heard a knock at the door. When she opened it, Miss Duck was pleased to find that Nutmeg and B.J. were on her doorstep. They were neighborhood youngsters, and it was the first day of their summer vacation. Nutmeg was the grandson of her next door neighbor, Colonel Jeremiah Squirrel. The

Colonel was one of the founding fathers of Tubblewood. B.J. lived down the street. His father, Arnold Otter, was the mayor of Tubblewood.
The youngsters were excited for their vacation to begin. They wanted to play outside, but all the other adults were too busy. They wanted to know if Miss Duck had any ideas for something fun to do. They always came to her because they knew she would take the time to answer their questions.
Miss Duck took a thoughtful pause. She was trying to recall what she used to do during summers when she was younger. Then she had a wonderful idea. She would take them to Tubblewood Creek for a picnic and a swim. First, she called Jeremiah and Arnold to let them know what they planned to do. Next, she fixed a picnic lunch while the youngsters went home to get their swimming trunks.
Nutmeg came armed with the new skateboard he had gotten for his birthday. B.J., who was younger than Nutmeg, took a seat in a brightly colored blue and red wagon. Miss Duck would pull him behind her bicycle. After she loaded the lunch and they all put on their safety helmets, they began their journey to Tubblewood Creek.
Riding on the dirt roads through the woods to the creek filled Miss Duck with happy memories. She and her duckling pals used to go to the creek almost every day during the summer. There they would play games

When they reached the creek, Miss Duck was very dismayed. The birds were no longer singing. The air was stale and smelled like rubber.
