ABOUT THE AUTHOR
To my wife, Jessica, for inspiring me to write this book. Your love and assistance are invaluable. I love you very much!
WELCOME
Congratulations! You are out of credit card debt!!
What?
That’s right.
Your balance is zero…on MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express, all the department and specialty store cards, gas cards…………………………..ZERO!
How can that be? I owe $2,000 on MasterCard, $5,000 on Visa, $750 on Discover, and those are just the ones I remember right off the top of my head.
I know. Been there. You see no way out because all you can see are due dates and minimum payments. It’s frustrating; it’s overwhelming; at its extreme, it’s scary. Maybe you’re getting phone calls from collection agencies. They like to threaten, don’t they?
What can I do? Where can I turn?
You can pay off the debt, and you can turn within.
Once I accepted the fact that I had gotten myself into credit card debt, I could start getting myself out of it. I could not start paying off my debt until I said, The Buck Stops Here!
(that is, in my wallet).
Once I stood up, my credit card debt fell down
….steadily, and eventually, rapidly.
Did you get a huge pay raise to do this?
No, I was a part-time teacher and tutor during most of this time.
Did you get a huge gift from relatives to pay off some (or all) of this debt?
No, in fact, I did not talk about this with family at that time because I was embarrassed.
For some of them, this book will be the first they’ve heard of it.
So what did you do?
First, I decided to wean myself off credit cards. I had to stop using them for every little thing I bought. I turned that thought into action…or inaction.
Before long, I went from using credit cards for the most minor purchases to hardly using them at all.
Prior to making up my mind, I would use credit cards at least fifteen to twenty times per month. In my first year of recovery,
I used my cards a grand total of twelve times…for the whole year!
No, I did not go cold turkey
that first year, but that’s OK. You can’t completely change a habit overnight. Twelve times is certainly a step in the right direction. And guess what? I did go cold turkey
during my second year and have done so at other times since then, too. I do use credit cards occasionally, but I don’t remember the last time that I
