    FOREWORD

The Earth is under a siege - a terrible siege on our planet and its inhabitants, a siege by the wrong works and destructive activities of mankind. The Earth is in the grip of the vices of men, of hatred of man against his fellow man and the urge for destruction. It is in the vicious grip of mismanagement and abuse, manifesting in terrifying conditions on our planet as climate change and its consequence such as catastrophes and disasters unleashes massive devastation around the world.

Conflicts, terror activities, wars have overrun the Earth and weapons of annihilation are poised to destroy life on our planet. In all countries of the world, there is boiling up and fermentations and the battle for freedom and the soul of man is underway.

The seriousness of the threat which at this stage, I presume has become obvious to world leaders and indeed to many living on Earth today, would have aroused an awakening, inciting us to begin to ask questions as to what all the signs of the present time portend for humanity.

With even the faintest recognition of the grave danger mankind and our planet are into, it is expected that a serious reflection would have followed leading to a strong commitment and collective action to try to avert these looming dangers, closing in from all directions, by desiring to change or to undertake corrective measures in the way mankind has lived and carried out affairs on this planet.

Consistent warning signs followed by reactions from nature, the rise of terror organizations, deadly forces of annihilation intent on overrunning the whole world and shackling human freedom, should have incited all countries to this necessary change of stance, leading to the uniting of forces and coming together to confront these common enemies. Rather, mankind generally continues moving deeper and deeper in the direction that gives no hope for a reversal in the present problem-charged, crisis-torn world.

Like an ostrich, man buries his head in the sand amid all the dangers, but exposing his body, uncaring, pursuing more dangerous paths. New forms of violence, criminality and wickedness, new forms of diseases and destructive mania are emerging and man is going deeper into ways that provoke dangers to humans, the planet and other creatures in it.

The present efforts employed by world leaders to address the problems of mankind seem ineffective and even counterproductive, because the one-sided focus and seeming lack of appreciation of the problem, and lack of right commitment and sincerity, could never lead to the solution as it takes no account of the fulfilment of the true goals of existence nor the recognition of the reason mankind is on Earth.

Many conferences, summits, work sessions, gath erings of eminent world leaders, aimed at addressing the issues of world security, climate change and indeed all problems confronting humanity, year after year yield next to nothing if not more complications.

Even as the dreaded terror organizations are spreading their tentacles to hold the whole world in their vicious dragnet, world leaders still hold on to their selfish interests, national and personal, and watch while the earth is being devastated and great numbers of the human population are massacred every day. Yet what is needed from them is one bold decision to put mankind and the planet first. A common stand and a decisive cooperative action to bring to an end this reign of terror that has brought mankind to its knees and is still intent on wiping human beings off the face of the devastated planet.

The summits on climate change - the latest being the Paris Climate Change Summit of 2015, which all world leaders unanimously held as the hope for the solution to mankind's contribution to the phenomenon, and praised their genius for coming up with what they believed to be a benevolent, generous and clever agreement - call for our collective sense of true human values and the recognition that only a return to the natural path of life will yield the solution.

In spite of the optimism reposed on the Paris Summit and considering the antecedents, for those who are genuinely concerned about the true purpose of our human existence and the link of our evolution with the Earth, would it not have become evident that work should begin on the individual level? If every person living on Earth recognizes the right thing and applies it, the collective right recognition and activities of all will culminate in the type of life we so ardently long for to become the future of our world - a world of love, peace, beauty, security and health for all humans, and our planet, freed from the siege of wrong human actions and volition, will swing up joyfully in fulfilment of its reason of existence. The works of governments, institutions and organizations that are established by human beings who know and follow the guiding principles of life in everything, will present a joyful life on a planet that is healthy, supportive and beautiful.

Therefore it is a goal that all human beings should joyfully wish to pursue; the goal of striving to recognize and adapt to the Will of the Creator concerning how human beings should live, work and carry out all endeavours. This is the way to the achievement of all that guarantees happiness, peace, and fulfilment of all our legitimate longings. This way, the individual efforts and the collective endeavour of all who have gained the true Knowledge of the Will of the Creator of all the Worlds, and use same in all their activities provide a way for the emergence of a New Life in conformity with how our world should be.

An earnest concern in connection with the present condition of life on Earth should move the entire humanity to seek the Knowledge of how our world should be and the light conditions that should have existed here. We should then deploy all efforts in a genuine determination to end the present danger confronting the whole of humanity and our planet. The danger is real. This is the moment of a major decision for mankind, the period of either/or…

Robert Redford calls our attention to the need to change to wiser decisions that will alter the destiny of the planet and its inhabitants towards survival: What we are living with is the result of human choices and it can be changed by making better, wiser choices.

This book resents, in its first part titled THE SIEGE, the consequences of many unhealthy attitudes, the wrong choices and wrong decisions of mankind against our planet and its inhabitants. Like a siege on the human consciousness, it prevents him even now from a calm organized thinking to appreciate the seriousness of the situation and confront the siege of his wrong works, in the right way, thereby saving himself and the planet from destruction.

The book further, in the second part titled The Radiant Citadel Of Hope, portrays a people on this Earth striving to live and build a happy world as a transition until mankind attains to the maturity of building a world as it should be. A world as willed by the Creator if mankind truly strives for it, making use of the Help available to him for the purpose.

    PART ONE

    THE SIEGE

"The earth's environment is crumbling in what seems as slow motion, in response to the onslaught of more and more people, and more and more technology and more and more wilful environmental vandalism.

The solution we seek will be found in a new faith in the future which justifies action in the present, a new courage to choose higher values in the conduct of human affairs, a new reverence for absolute principles that can serve as guiding stars for the future course of our species and our place within it."

    - Al Gore

    CHAPTER ONE

    THE SOLITARY FIGURE

"Nothing has challenged the survival capacity of the human race as intensely as the threat now posed by climate change…This is the biggest challenge of our time."

    - Babatunde Raji Fashola

The sun was at its peak, beating down mercilessly with its scorching rays on the head of a man standing at the middle of a vast farmland examining the produce of the season which had ripened and was ready for the harvest.

He reached for his straw hat hung behind him by means of a thin rope and adjusted it firmly on his head, from which sweat ran down his heat-burnt face. From his pocket, he brought out a small white towel and wiped his face, neck and shoulders.

The heat of the sun had become more and more intense and unbearable. The man began to think of the frequent media discussions focusing on climate change which suddenly gained worldwide interest and attention, although it has been sending dangerous signals since the beginning of the 20th century. The reports expressed great concern over the progressive impact and warned of the terrible dangers ahead as accompanying catastrophes swept across the world, inflicting heavy human casualties and massive material destruction. Calling the situation a global threat which posed a grave danger to life on the planet, the reports recognized the contributions of humankind, human policies and actions to the planetary emergency - as the unfolding phenomenon was been described.

Although countries had identified some of the causes of global warming as carbon emissions from burning of fossil fuels, emissions from atomic energy, destruction of forests, carbon emissions from industrial, chemical plants and vehicles, flaring of gases, massive spraying of insecticides and herbicides and many others, and recognizing the type and extent of the problems as well as that the problems have a global dimension which is more pronounced in industrialized countries who were the generators of the greatest amount of emissions, they were still weak in decisively addressing the problem comprehensively. Since the problem of greenhouse gas emission, as being one of the culprits in climate change came to public awareness, it had been allowed to advance and escalate until it had reached a crisis point and its destructive effect had become monumental. Instead of promptly addressing it and making an honourable and complete reversal of policies, beginning remedial measures that embrace alternative and safe ways of energy transformation which do not pose a threat to life on the planet and its inhabitants, most countries stubbornly stood their ground of short term national interest for gains in their power tussles and economic dominance to the neglect of their primary responsibility towards humanity for the promotion of the welfare of life on Earth and the protection of the planet. The search for the so-called progress, material comfort, high standard of living and economic security completely blinded countries from recognizing the full implications of the outcome of the means they had chosen to realize these.

The international response to climate change began in 1992 setting out a framework for action aimed at stabilizing atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. However, countries continued to focus on how to improve their standard of living, achieve material comfort and attain economic and military supremacy, and seemed not to take notice of the advancing deadly menace and take early action until our planet and its inhabitants were well into the seemingly intractable claws of the monster we created.

Some countries completely rejected cooperation with efforts to limit the extent of their contribution to the problems including being hostile towards treaties on the environment, stating that it would hurt their economies. Countries which should have led in the efforts to maintain or restore the health of the planet and its inhabitants, have demonstrated a surprising lack of seriousness and commitment even in the face of obvious grave dangers which they all seemed to have recognized going by their speeches at earlier conferences. Others that could be said to have reacted positively to the need to address global warming, some years back, put up a policy on bio-fuel, although the thrust of that policy in its scope could not attempt to avert the problem. Also experts had discovered that bio-fuel was not as harmless as was previously thought.

In attempting a solution, some countries settled for a long term approach. But the truth was that even with those palliatives by countries who wished to give attention to global warming and its causes, ever greater amounts of poisoning emissions continued to be generated through intensified efforts towards the so-called economic progress, armaments and the quest for a high standard of living.

As the 2008 Olympic Games approached, the smoky Chinese fog of industrial emissions again brought to highlight the problem of climate change and was part of the major issues confronting the organizers of the games. It had generated negative reactions from many participating countries. Even a very destructive earthquake at that time could not elicit a positive reaction from China - which was known to have a very poor record of pollution control - to tackle the causes of disasters traceable to human actions. The problem was allowed to get worse until its citizens had to go about wearing masks as the atmosphere seemed like a toxic blanket.

With the level of the threat posed by climate change, and the catastrophes taking place for example in the United States of America, where the problem has taken a monumental dimension: forest fires, floods, extreme cold weather, hurricanes, etc. America should have taken a decisive lead as she does in some other areas to mobilize international action and deploy effort and resources to challenge this global threat. It will be recalled that indeed America discovered global warming as far back as 1988 during the heat waves, fires, floods and super hurricanes of that year. It was expected that serious action would have followed. Catastrophic events continued to send warnings to America and also to other countries but the response was to manage the disasters rather than tackle the causes in a significant way.

It was thought that the outcome of the Kyoto summit held hope, but very quickly, developed countries and emerging countries began pressing for a legal instrument to do away with the Kyoto agreement to the outcry of third world countries and China.

What a sobering position observed during the 2008 G8 (now G7) Summits! Still the proposed line of action could not go far enough to denote a significant positive shift of position from earlier attitudes.

The increasing awareness of the consequences of the abuse of the environment on the physical, ecological, economic, health and social dimensions should have stimulated leaders to take selfless action. Like the Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said at the Copenhagen Climate change Summit, Translate political will into a strong common approach to forge an agreement that will provide for effective global solution.

The Copenhagen summit came and went. And each summit drew heightened attention to the progressing impact and the deteriorating state of our environment. More and more conferences, working groups, discussions, time and financial budgets were poured into all these efforts but our planet seemed to be heating up
