With the intriguing, curious and somehow strange title of The sophistication of the meaningless, Gregorio Sorén (Havana, 1973) offers us here and now these "Eight illustrated fables for adults" —as the subtitle says—, in a bilingual edition whose original text in Spanish is accompanied with a neat English translation by Sueli Rocha Rojas, as well as beautiful illustrations by the Thai artist Chidchanok Huangconsri. 

From the first one onward —just to mention a few examples— there are scenes and characters of remarkable human substance and literary quality: a traveler who leaves a city, one day, leaving behind mixed feelings, and sooner or later, that does not matter, another city that he will love forever; someone that is pleased to go to a show not to enjoy what happens there, but to "observe the observers", and who, by doing so, captures that disturbing "sign of our era..: the sophistication of the meaningless..."; a "club of sufferers" whose anguish makes us remember certain poems of the great César Vallejo; and as a farewell, in the story entitled "The passion", another poetic paraphrase, this time inspired by the genius of Quevedo: the incredible but beautiful story of a constant love beyond death...

 

Con el sugestivo, curioso y en más de un sentido raro título de La sofisticación de lo insignificante, Gregorio Sorén (La Habana, 1973) nos ofrece aquí y ahora estas "Ocho fábulas ilustradas para adultos" –tal lo dice el subtítulo–, edición bilingüe a cuyo texto original en español acompaña una pulcra traducción al inglés de Sueli Rocha Rojas, y con bellas ilustraciones de la artista tailandesa Chidchanok Huangconsri.

En qué reside la rareza de su título, eso han de descubrirlo por sí mismos los lectores; y para su placer seguramente, puesto que lo "raro" no le viene sino de lo "extraordinario, sobresaliente o excelente en su línea" –y copio definiciones del Diccionario de la Real Academia de la Lengua Española– de todas estas breves piezas narrativas que componen el libro.

Desde la primera de ellas en adelante –por sólo señalar unos pocos ejemplos–, se suceden escenas y personajes de notables sustancia humana y factura literaria: un viajero que abandona una ciudad, un día cualquiera, dejando atrás sentimientos encontrados, y antes o después, eso no importa, otra ciudad a la cual ya amará para siempre; alguien que se complace en ir a un espectáculo no a disfrutar con lo que allí ocurre, sino a "observar a los observadores", y al punto captar ese inquietante "signo de nuestra era..: la sofisticaciónde lo insignificante..."; un "club de sufridores" cuyas angustias nos ponen a recordar ciertos poemas del gran César Vallejo; y como despedida, en el cuento titulado "La pasión", otra paráfrasis poética, esta vez inspirada en el genio de Quevedo : la historia increíble pero hermosa de un amor constante más allá de la muerte...
