    Clutterbug - Lorraine Leet

    INTRODUCTION

Clutter is anything that is not well arranged.  Clutter happens when things continue to gather to the point that they become jumbled up, resulting in a difficulty to arrange in a manner that is aesthetically pleasing, and an efficient, effective use of space.  This includes things that may be useful, and things that are considered not of any particular use anymore.  Some examples of this would be toys left on the floor, mail sitting on the kitchen table, shoes outside the hallway closet, clothes that need to be put away, or work documents not returned to the file cabinet.  This list is by no means all-inclusive, there many other things that could be added that are considered to be clutter.

Clutter tends to be things that are not necessary for life that people hold on to.  There is a myriad of reasons, for this behaviour, most of which can be defended by the person who clutters.

Clutter is the irony of space, area, location, with no space.

Clutter is defined by Merriam-Webster as to fill or cover with scattered or disordered things that impede movement or reduce effectiveness (2018).

Clutter in ones’ life tends to take over and can produce a range of feelings, from exhaustion to secrecy.

This book will take a look at the various ways that clutter can invade and overtake ones’ life.

It is most important to examine why a person clutters, as opposed to the clutter itself.  For this reason, this book will investigate the Psychology of Clutter.

This leads to a look at why people hold on to their clutter.

A comparison between people who live with clutter and hoarders will be drawn.

Factors that contribute to clutter will be included.

This book will also offer some simple, easy to apply techniques to help anyone start to get a grip on the clutter in their home.

Some of the outcomes or spin-offs of decluttering will be identified.  Not surprisingly, these spin-offs are all positive.

An overall important task in decluttering is the purge.  This book will look at the psychology behind why it is so difficult to purge and the beneficial results of a clutter purge.

The link between clutter and time management will be assessed.

This book will also look at some of the reasons why people tolerate clutter, and why it can be a difficult behaviour to adjust.

    The Psychology of Clutter

MOST PEOPLE ARE REPULSED by the idea of being called a hoarder.  It is much easier to swallow identifying with a little clutter in the home.  When becoming sincere, it may be acknowledged that there is a surplus of things in the home that is of little use or value, anymore.  The problem arises when it becomes difficult to part with these items.

People maintain the idea that they are reasonably tidy humans, yet it can become a daily struggle to regularly declutter. Are these items so important, making it difficult to throw them away?  This is a part of letting go.

There is an annual behaviour adopted by many called Spring Cleaning. This is when people are motivated by the dawn of a new season, to clean out things that have accumulated throughout the winter.  The reasoning is that the comfort provided by the increase in
