About this ebook

Two New Orleans investigators are up against an inhuman killer in this “sleek, fast-moving” mystery (Kirkus Reviews).

When criminal psychologist Kit Franklyn goes to meet an anonymous admirer, the date ends before it begins—as the man drops dead at her feet. Now, yet again, her evening’s companion is her bulky boss, chief medical examiner Andy Broussard.

Broussard deduces that the man died carrying a lethal pathogen comparable to the Ebola virus. And when another body is found with the same infection, the threat of a pandemic becomes all too real. But while the danger to the public must be contained, the threat is far more personal than Broussard or Franklyn realize. Because the carrier’s still out there—and he’s looking for Broussard.

“Entertains even as the gruesome death count mounts. . . . Against the humid, wild and funky Crescent City setting, Donaldson delivers some genuinely heart-stopping suspense.” —Publishers Weekly

Author

D.J. Donaldson

Donald (Don) Jay Donaldson, who also writes as David Best, was born in 1940 and is a now retired professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology. He holds a Ph.D. in human anatomy and his entire academic career was spent at the University of Tennessee, Health Science Center, where he published dozens of papers on wound-healing, and taught microscopic anatomy to thousands of medical and dental students. He lives in Memphis, Tennessee with his wife and two West Highland terriers. In the spring of most years he simply cannot stop buying new flowers and other plants for the couple’s prized backyard garden. He is the author of five medical thrillers and seven forensic mysteries, the latter featuring the hugely overweight and equally brilliant New Orleans medical examiner, Andy Broussard, and his gorgeous psychologist sidekick, Kit Franklyn. Of these it has been said that they contain ‘lots of Louisiana color, pinpoint plotting and two highly likable characters’, whilst the Los Angeles Times states ‘the autopsies are detailed enough to make Patricia Cornwell fans move farther south for their forensic fixes ….. splendidly eccentric local denizens, authentic New Orleans and bayou backgrounds’.

The prologue starts the book off with a man by the name of Walter Baldwin experiencing some strange symptoms, blurry vision, nosebleed, headache, all with the feeling that he was losing his mind. The story takes off from there with people getting sick, the cause unknown and it is Andy Broussard's job as New Orlean's medical examiner, along with his partner Kit Franklyn to find out what this mysterious 'bug' is and to stop it spreading. This is the second book in the New Orlean's Forensic Series. I had not read the first so was a bit apprehensive as to whether or not I could catch up on the characters featured. I needn't have worried because as soon as I got a few chapters in, I was hooked. A very fast paced medical mystery that kept me turning the pages. If you love a good medical mystery, or for that matter a good crime novel than you need to pick up this book. I gave the book 5 stars because the writing style is enjoyable and the reader comes away with the thought of 'what if'? This could very well happen in our society today. This author knows his stuff!!!

Louisiana Fever by D.J. Donaldson is a great read. The book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved how there are so many aspects to the story that all tied together perfectly. The author always got to the point and did not drag anything out which I really appreciated. What is this book about? Most of the story is told by two people in the book; chief medical examiner Andy Broussard and psychologist Kit Franklyn who works with Broussard in the medical examiners office. One day Kit goes to meet a secret admirer who dies at her feet. Broussard learns not soon enough during the autopsy that this admirer is a carrier of a lethal pathogen similar to the deadly Ebola virus. People are now starting to turn up at the morgue, dead of corpse, with this virus. This book has really good writing about the process that takes place in the morgue and the science was flawless. I loved that the virus actually had a voice in the book by saying what it had to do and the situations it was in. Very cool and original. Broussard where is Kit? She has has not showed up for work. Hmm... Kit has been taken by the bad guys. Her boyfriend Teddy goes looking for her and then vanishes too. Let me add I was so happy that it just spoke very little of their feeling for each other and not a bunch of romance added in. Thank You Donaldson. The description of the bayou was told in such a way you felt as if you where there among it. Now this is where the review gets tricky because I do not want to give anything away. Remember me mentioning bad guys? Well, these guys are cold blooded killers who are trying to make a quick buck smuggling in the the U.S. birds. Are they only bringing in birds? Believe me it all ties together so nicely. Who lives? Who dies? Who in the world was Kits admirer? Not going to tell you but I will say this is a book you should not miss. Louisiana Fever is action packed, white knuckled, cannot stop reading so you will be up all night type of book!

New Orleans is subject to an outbreak of some sorts and who better to flush out the cause than Dr. Andy Broussard and Kit Franklin, his protégé. Kit gets a message to meet someone at a diner. She does. He drops dead. Not the best of introductions.Andy, the ME for the city, feels something is not going well but unsure as to what until his lab assistant dies from some sort of hemorraghic fever. Kit is kidnapped, her parents are lying and the main kidnapper is pretty odd all by himself. This book, written in 1996 is the fifth Donaldson book. It is very entertaining and the office of an ME has been well researched in its writing. Kit is stubborn in wants to be very independent. Andy is the great-uncle she never had and the other players do their jobs perfectly. All in all, I’m sorry I missed this one when it first came out and plan to go back and read the other four soon.
