Dad and I sat around the fire, staring at the flames. The s’more I was eating topped off what was probably the best day ever. We’d been surveying the forests around Mt. Rainier for the past three days, and today we’d finally made our way up into the valley where we’d most likely find the Northern Spotted Owl. Here in the mid 20th century, the species would be extinct within the next several decades.

I loved being outside in the fresh air, hiking the woods with Dad, who spent most of the day with a smile on his face too. This was the life.

Tomorrow we’d catch a male and female owl, take them aboard the new ship called the DUV, short for Deployable Utility Vehicle, and head back to space. Tonight I just took in the view. Stars looked so much different down here as they shimmered in the atmosphere.

Of course, I loved flying the DUV too—a glorious ship, all sleek, fast, and more importantly, capable of time-jumping. Up until now, when we wanted to travel back in time, we had to do it with the Animal Rescue Cruiser—the ARC, a massive ship that took a great deal of time to prepare every time we moved her. We needed to take the animals to the ARC, but it was much more efficient to leave her parked on the far side of the moon, and take a
