    Cyborg Awakenings - Christine Myers

    Chapter One

Cyborgs VKD-08463, 8464, 8465, and 8466 strode into the Uloi capital building in Dojarr. They wore full body armor marked with the Federation insignias, so there was no mistaking who they were fighting for. Mesaarkan sentries fired at them as they marched in and shot all of them dead as they moved toward the governor’s office.

One large male held a weapon to the leader’s head, warning the cyborgs back. VKD-8463 stopped, raised his sidearm, and shot the Mesaarkan through the head. At the same time, VKD-8465 shot the weapon from the enemy’s hand before he could pull the trigger and kill the governor.

What the hell did you think you were doing? the middle-aged male governor screamed at the cyborgs. They could have killed me.

No, sir, said VKD-8463. not before he was dead. His weapon was on safety when he pulled the trigger. It had been that way so he didn’t accidentally kill you before he needed to. I knew that I had plenty of time to shoot him.

VKD-8463 did an immediate about-face and started walking out of the office.

Where are you going? the governor demanded.

VKD-8463 stopped and made a half-turn back. Your city is secure, you are freed, and we have completed our mission successfully. He turned his back to the governor and strode out of the building.

As the four brothers crossed the city through the carnage they had wrought, they realized they had been created for the darkest deeds of the human race. They had known pleasure in taking the lives of other beings. They were the Vikings of the future, born and bred to conquer by killing everyone in their way. Bred, born, and conditioned to find the darkness in their souls, killing as many as necessary to protect the Earth’s humans and Federation sectors.

That was the day VKD-8463 chose to give himself the name Vyken Dark.

Cyborgs were made for war. The United Galactic Federation’s Earth sector made them serve in their marine infantry. They started making them because of the dwindling numbers of natural humans signed on to Star Force. But they were still unprepared when the Mesaarkans came and destroyed every major city on Earth without warning… And without mercy.

Surviving the Mesaarkans’ destruction of Earth, the Cybernetic Enhanced Human Fabrication Corporation continued to produce cyborgs for twenty years after the war began. VKD-8463 was born there. None of the cyborgs were awakened or activated with names. They were known by their batch identification and serial number until they chose their own name.

At the age of five years, they became adults. VKD-8463, later known as Vyken Dark, was activated as a fully functional enhanced human when the Federation starship Starfire Nemesis requested five replacement cyborgs. VKD-8463, VKD-8464, VKD-8465, VKD-8466, and VKD-8467 were awakened from stasis two weeks before the ship arrived to get them ready. They needed to get their bearings mentally and physically in the real world after being in stasis for a year after reaching maturity. Genetically, the five were brothers, though they weren’t identical. Four of them were infantry ground fighters, and one was a medic. However, he could also serve in the infantry if that’s where he was needed. The other four were a fighting unit with VKD-8463 as their team leader.

VKD-8463 had proved himself capable of leadership in the virtual wargames they played while in stasis. He had the most hypothetic kills of any of them and was good at strategizing seemingly
