Historical perspectives on how and why civilizations collapse applied to the current state of the US. Predictions are general rather than specific, and do not buy into an apocalyptic "we're all going to die" scenario. Greer points out the ruling classes become more and more alienated from the inner proletariat and that the resources to support the layers of mediation that constitute the middle and upper classes become harder to supply until something give. This is not an all at once process, it is just that it is harder and harder to get 'back to normal' after each crisis. I would suggest comparing the recovery of San Francisco from the 1907 quake with the recovery of New Orleans from Katrina. San Francisco, then on the edge of a new state full of resources went on to grow far beyond its 1907 condition. New Orleans, in a state ravaged by political corruption and years of exploitation of resources has yet to recover fully. Even the emergency response at the time was more effective, despite the improved technology that should have rushed rescue and aid workers directly to where they were needed.

Although a little repetative and tough to follow at times. I absolutely loved this book and the point of view shared by the Author. I will definitely be buying a physical copy.
