Chapter One
Scientists, Robert Fletcher, 68, and Randolph Krauss, 58, were killed instantly in an explosion at Cybertech Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The one story building located at 101 Lomas Road rocked downtown in a three-alarm blaze at 3:17 p.m. today. It burned to the ground during the seven minutes rescue workers took to arrive at the scene.
Cybertech's scientists perfected Smart Chip, an E-prom chip one hundred times faster than Prodigy and unlike any computer technology that we have on the market today. Cybersoft expected to revolutionize the computer industry with it and kept the technology under top secret wraps at this facility. It is unknown whether the technology was destroyed in the blaze.
A tropical breeze flowed across Tony Pierce's wicked grin as he watched anchor Julie Simon's Hillsborough County, Florida newscast. He rolled Cybertech's only Smart Chip prototype between his thumb and index finger, technology he needed to insure success of his plans to take over Cybersoft Industries, and laughed a deep-bellied gloat. It was a portion of his calculated plan to get viciously even with his brother, John, for taking up with his beautiful ex-girlfriend, Sunny, whom he could not stand the thought of losing to his older sibling. It was the first time he actually regretted losing a woman, but the fact that she'd shacked up with his own brother was tearing him up inside.
Six months later Sunny Taylor diverted large dark brown eyes to the floor. Mr. Young, I lost your document.
She rubbed tired eyes with both hands.
Nothing could be worse. She knew how bad he needed that brief. Trial was next week.
What do you mean lost?
Brian Young paused with the realization that if what she said was true, he was screwed. He held his gold pen in mid sentence on top of a yellow legal pad. He couldn't afford to reschedule. Crotchety Judge Barnes would tell him to take a hike. No way the Judge would allow Brian to reschedule a third time. Brian had married the pompous toad's niece without family approval. He ran into the Judge's brand new bright red Dodge Ram pickup truck in the courthouse parking lot first part of last week. This could very well be the third strike against him.
My entire computer system flashed and completely wiped out.
Sunny fidgeted medium length French manicured nails against a dark oak door frame and tried not to appear too nervous.
What happened?
He rolled a black leather office chair sideways toward her and slid to a stop in front of her.
Nothing's there.
She leaned against the doorjamb. This is so embarrassing. Please don't fire me.
What do you mean nothing there?
He scratched his temple with the pen back. His engraved name etched into the side of the pen sparkled against recessed lighting.
My system bleeped off screen entirely.
She brushed her silky blonde hair away from high cheekbones behind her ears. It won't boot. I'm getting a blank screen.
She fluttered her eyelashes in frustration.
You interface with Barb's computer. Pull it up on hers.
He watched her smooth her gray linen dress at the hips with small shaky hands.
I can't.
She looked over her shoulder toward Barb's desk and tried to hide a lone tear.
You can't.
He cocked his head sideways and studied her feminine frustration.
Everyone is down.
Sunny tossed her hands into the air and folded them across her chest. Then she dropped her hands and began nervously smoothing her dress again.
Retype it.
He shoved the pad forward and rolled his chair backward. Man, he hated blonde bimbos. His eyes narrowed as he drew in his lips into an angry set.
Sunny was no dingy idiot. She stepped toward the door with her shoulders slightly slumped. He felt sorry for her for a split second, until he thought about how Judge Barnes would rip him apart in court next week for being unprepared.
Don't you have a hard copy?
He reached for his notes on the brief. It was a scribbled bunch of jumble even he couldn't decipher. He wasn't a good note taker. If he didn't dictate shortly after his note writing, he might as well forget it, because he couldn't read his own handwriting.
No, sir,
she responded and disappeared down the hall curling a lock of her hair around her index finger.
Cybersoft Board Meeting
It was the beginning of Cybersoft's fourth quarter. The packed auditorium looked as if it could be a small civic center. The meeting that was winding down to its conclusion was a bragging session about how well Cybersoft had done, with the exception of Cybertech Laboratory's loss and a discussion about the company's future plans.
President, CEO, and founder, John Miller smoothed a red silk power tie into the front of an outrageous double breasted suit and flashed a wide sparkling smile. Last year's Cybersoft sales figures topped our projection by four million.
He placed his hands on his hips and proudly stood back.
The room roared with applause. John stood straighter, grinned, pushed designer glasses against his nose bridge and took a moment to scan the crowd for Sunny.
We have my half brother, Tony Pierce, and his team to thank.
He motioned, palm outstretched toward a group quartet seated to his left. Paulette Seals,
he paused briefly as he studied pretty businesslike Paulette with a blank face that did not reveal his feelings behind the emotionless mask. ...James Thompson, and Carl Williams.
The applause rose louder.
Tony stood, 6'2, coal black hair, deep brown eyes with long, thick eyelashes. It was obvious that he and John were brothers. The resemblance was shockingly uncanny. He waved, nodded and flashed a toothy smile toward a group of six women who swooned loudly from a front table. Most women considered him not only handsome, but without a doubt the most charming man they'd ever met. Most of which threw themselves shamefully at his feet. Tony was used to it and charismatically reveled in it. Men envied and hated him for it. The woman became too awestruck by his good looks and debonair ways to realize what a lethal snake he was until they had already accepted his sexual advances and then it was too late to back away gracefully from the man known by his peers as
Tony the Lady Conqueror".
Sunny eased into the room and moved sideways along the back wall. She observed Tony’s cocky manner in which he presumptuously paraded his necessary introduction and felt her stomach roll in absolute disgust. Her soft hair cascaded around her face as she dropped her chin to hide the roll of her eyes. She found her spot fairly close to the front, off to the side of the third aisle and glanced upward at John. He noticed her quiet entrance from the moment she set foot inside the packed auditorium and felt his heart jump. He'd been watching for her, rather waiting for her. He adored her and it was blatantly apparent. The moment he spotted her, his entire countenance beamed.
It was no secret John had a huge thing for quiet Sunny. Call it a crush, a fancy, whatever you will. John was desperately in love with his brother's ex-girlfriend. The last place he expected to lose his heart was with one of Tony’s conglomeration of leftovers. If it had not been for the fact that Sunny had been with Tony first, he would have asked her to marry him months ago. Just the thought continued to gnaw at him like a man's ego will especially when on occasion he'd catch Sunny eyeing Tony like there was still something going on there within her framework of feelings. She'd assured him enough times she had no tender feelings for Tony, yet there were times like just now that he doubted her and he hated himself for double thinking her sincerity.
Hello, Sunny,
he announced with passion and ran his fingers through curly black hair. Twenty-five hundred employees turned to see Sunny's embarrassed wave. The crowd giggled loudly.
In spite of our loss at Albuquerque, we're confident this is going to be Cybersoft's best year.
John finished his speech and motioned for Sunny.
Sunny was staring at Tony in animated conversation with a leggy blonde gal. The uncommon frown on Sunny's face disturbed John.
Come on, Sunny. Let's get out of here.
He leaned into the mike to get Sunny's attention. She slowly removed her attention from Tony and smiled at John. She realized John wanted to get her away from watching Tony work on another woman as quickly as possible as he waved a hearty good-bye to the audience.
Sunny made her way toward John as practically every man in the room watched her graceful high-heeled movement. Sunny didn't notice. She usually wore flat, two-toned Nina oxfords and custom fitted Bert Newman linen pant suits. This was the first time any of them with the exception of Tony had seen her shapely legs.
Tony nudged James and leaned over to Carl. Man, she's got some fine looking legs.
For a woman who wasn't a teenager she was absolutely awesome, Tony thought. He burned out a long time ago on the younger simpletons. Unfortunately, it was the clueless youth that was single and available for him to date. The older ones were either married or disgustingly desperate. Whereas the good ones like Sunny were all married or involved.
I second that motion,
Carl commented.
She runs every week day morning,
James revealed with a big grin.
Tony leaned back toward James. How do you know that?
She lives in my neighborhood. Remember?
James did not take his roving eyes off of Sunny.
I suppose that's the same time you walk that horse you call a dog? What's his name?
Tony smirked and crossed one leg over the other.
Like clockwork. His name is Tiny. Don't forget she's been dating the boss for a long time now. I see his limousine at her house just about every night.
You're early,
John took Sunny's arm and whisked her out the back door.
We had an accident at work.
Sonny picked up her high heeled pace to catch up with him.
Good to see you.
He hugged her against his side and rushed her toward his limousine.
The driver spotted their approach and hurried to open her door.
Today hasn't been so great.
Sunny shook her head from side to side.
You want to talk about it?
He glanced down at the new shoes she was wearing. Black suede leather, three and a half-inch heel. Four thin straps ran across the top. Sexiest thing he was able to get Sunny into. Saying she was conservative was an understatement.
I like them,
he remarked, careful not to say too much and frighten her away from wearing anything more daring. He loved sexy shoes and Sunny was a little bit too conservative for his taste sometimes.
Thanks for buying them for me.
She blushed.
I didn't think you'd wear them.
He paused at the open limousine door and looked at her with adoration as he ran his fingers through her the left side of her hair.
For you I would.
She kissed him gently on the cheek.
His entire demeanor melted. I'd like to see you wear a dress and high heels more often.
You would?
She grinned.
Yes.
I can do that.
She winked at him.
He smiled.
She relaxed into the padded comfort of the car. It's been a tough morning. Our entire computer system went off line.
John watched her and smiled as pulled her right shoe off and began to rub the ball of her small foot.
He laughed. Home.
He glanced at the driver and indicated with thumb up to roll the privacy window. That's no problem. I'll send some of my people over. We'll get your boss back up and running in no time.
She gave him her other foot.
I know Cyber virus can take care of it. That's not the problem. It's the brief I lost. Mr. Young is upset with me.
That isn't your fault.
He ran his index finger down the center of her arch and back up and down with a circular massaging motion.
Yes, it is. I didn't print a hard copy right after I typed it. I erased the transcription.
She sighed.
Opps.
He maneuvered onto his knees in front of her and began to kiss her neck.
Mr. Young didn't think it humorous.
She put her arms around his neck and nuzzled her nose against his cheek.
Let's worry about it Monday morning.
John relaxed into the feel of her. He took in her feminine smell in a deep breath. It was one of the things he revered about her. Sunny's signature aroma was an exceptionally clean, womanly scent. If only he could bottle it.
Sunny glanced out the window, closed her weary eyes, and momentarily rested her cool fingers against the lids.
Agreed?
He ran his hand up and down the center of her back.
She pulled away from him and looked at him briefly. Agreed.
Good.
He pulled her against him. I want to enjoy my weekend with you. Leave work at the office.
I can do that.
She snuggled into his chest.
Sunny was different from all the other girls. John, at 43, was one of the richest men in America. Cybersoft was the leading software manufacturer in the world. He managed to corner the market as a young man. Women dropped at his feet and he despised them for it. Except Sunny. Simple Sunny. She became his friend from the moment he met her. There was nothing extravagant about her, a sparkling white smile, with well structured face, 5'4", size five. She was nothing out of the ordinary. It took a second glance to notice her. Men usually did. She didn't pay attention. She fit the girl-next-door type, only she wasn't mousy.
She was quick witted and bright. In many ways she did not want attention from men, just from one. The one she chose, not the one who chose her. That man was John. He dazzled her from the moment she laid eyes on him, not because in her eyes he was extraordinarily good looking. It was the way he had looked at her when she met him. She connected with him. He mesmerized her with his smooth articulate voice and intelligent banter. She matched his intelligence. Her humor and bright mind intrigued him. Her conservative nature enthralled him, but it was her sincerity that tossed him on his butt, romantically speaking.
She had a forward way of shooting straight.
I'd like a chance to get to know you,
she tossed her first come on line in his direction and he fell--hook, line and sunk.
He had a special surprise for her he was having a difficult time keeping to himself. It took everything he could do not to let on. He suspected Sunny figured it out for herself and was keeping it from him. For now, he pretended she didn't know a thing and kept the tiny expensive surprise tucked inside a small box in his coat pocket. He waited for the perfect time to give it to her. Now was not the time or place. John still had the issue of her old relationship with Tony to work out in his own mind.
Monday Morning Blues
Monday mornings were not Sunny's best. Concern over Mr. Young's response to his lost brief wore on her face like Christmas lights. She flicked on her halogen desk light and punched the Power Cyb's on button. It flashed. A familiar bell sounded indicating it was powering up, but it didn't matter. She knew nothing was coming on line.
Mr. Young sauntered up and annoyingly hovered over her desk. Good morning, Sunny.
