Arrival in Cancun
From Fish Tacos to Serenity
While being transported from the aeropuerto
in the van shuttle to a secluded resort, El Mirage Playa, in Cancun, Mexico, I quickly looked at my travel schedule and noticed that the Resort was about forty-five minutes from the Cancun International Airport. The Resort was located on the Caribbean coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. I remembered thinking this is a long ride to get to serenity.
There were several people riding on the shuttle with me, who also appeared to be vacationers who looked just as tired as I felt. There was a couple with two young children, who wore matching travel attire, three older gentlemen dressed in Hawaiian shirts, and twin, adult, females, scantily clothed in the shortest shorts that I had seen in a long time. The standards for travel attire must have changed, and I was left off the memo. I am sure that the other observers saw the same things as I had, but they seem to be enjoying the view. I turned my head away from them so that I could look out the window at the scenery as we drove along, hoping to just unwind from the flight.
At some point, I dozed off during the ride, as I was feeling quite tired from the red-eye flight in to Cancun and then the long ride to the Resort. The twins chattered with excitement during most of the ride, but I managed to tune them out and doze off. I hope I didn’t snore! It was a hot and dusty ride, and the air conditioning on the shuttle wasn’t at all like the icy-cold air conditioning which I had in my car. My car’s air conditioning gives me the chills so much so that I have to turn it off and ride with the windows down most of the time. The weather back home in Altadena, California, a small city located just north of Pasadena, California, home of the Rose Bowl, (Excuse me, that is the football fan in me talking) is cooler than it is in Cancun right now, by at least 15 degrees. What I wouldn’t do for that chilly air conditioning from my car right
