Foreword

Most Skeptical Believer I’ve Met

My initial reaction to reading Jaime Licauco’s latest manuscript, When the Impossible Happens: From Skepticism to Complete Belief, was: It’s about time! Finally, you’re writing about yourself, I thought, with a big smile on my face. Here comes the good stuff. Although the author has openly argued with me in the past when I told him that his personal stories must be told, that it was inevitable, he obviously feels that now is the time. And I couldn’t agree with him more!

I had the luck, (I suppose Jimmy would never agree with that word as he demonstrates the extraordinary synchronicity of life over and over again), and the honor to meet Jaime Licauco back in 1983. I was doing healing work in Los Angeles, this was my second of nine trips to the Philippines, and I was anxious to meet the man who had written such important and knowledgeable books about the faith healers. I anticipated our initial meeting with curiosity; I had no idea if we would like each other or if he would be interested in talking with me. But we quickly discovered that we had a great deal in common. In fact, we felt that we had met before, and we became inseparable for the rest of that trip and several to follow.

Although I thought that my journeys to the Philippines were about researching on psychic surgery, I quickly discovered that there was a great deal more for me to explore. Jimmy was responsible for introducing me to some of the most amazing and mind-boggling displays of paranormal phenomena I have ever witnessed, and I admire the fact that to this day, he has continued his investigations. Over the years that I have known him and observed his tireless search for the truth, I often wondered what drove him forward in his search for proof of phenomena. Then one day, I realized that although he was always generous about making his findings available to the general public, he was driven less by a dedication to help others, as he was by a need to overcome his own skepticism.

I believe that a human being’s need to understand is the essential ingredient that makes an investigator excel in his work. This is certainly the case with Jimmy. I remember looking at the disbelief on his face one day, after we had seen a young man pop a ten centavo piece into his mouth and transform it into a peso. That was when I told him, Jimmy, you’re the most skeptical believer I’ve ever met. His laughter confirmed my statement, and we’ve been laughing about it ever since.

Mr. Licauco’s yearning to know and his collection of clear, prolific writings are a great gift to us all-they have greatly benefited his public in the past and are continuing to do so. Now, with this new book, I see that the author’s decision to share his personal experiences is part of a natural progression to the next level. The variety of stories is satisfying, the honesty that he shares with his readers is stunning, and I know that everyone who picks up this book will have an enlightening experience.

Revised Edition

In this revised edition of When the Impossible Happens: Confessions of a Reluctant Psychic, I have decided to change the title to When the Impossible Happens: From Skepticism to Complete Belief in order to reflect the transformation of my consciousness and belief system after 25 years. At that beginning of my spiritual journey, I was a complete skeptic, not believing anything for which I could find no scientific, logical or rational explanation. But because of so many seemingly impossible things that I have either personally experienced or witnessed, I have become a complete believer of psychic and mystical phenomena, or whatever one may choose to call it.

In this revised edition, I have eliminated two chapters that I don’t think are relevant to the whole theme of the book. On the other hand, I added three new chapters, namely Dreams that Come True, Validated Messages From the Dead, and Mystical Encounters with Christ.

I have also added several sub-topics which were not in the original edition of this book, because they had not yet happened at the time the book first came out in 1999.

I hope that with these new changes the reader will find the revised book more interesting and enjoyable.

Preface to the

1999 Edition

This is a book that I have for a long time hesitated to write, for two main reasons: First, I have never considered myself to be gifted psychically, much less to be a master, and second, people might not believe the paranormal stories that have happened to me. Although many of the stories in this volume can be confirmed by witnesses, a few of them happened when I was alone.

Despite the above considerations, I finally decided to write this book in the middle of 1997, because if I didn’t, I might forget the stories totally and therefore would have no record of them for future generations and researchers into this fascinating field of parapsychology and strange phenomena as experienced by a Filipino.

Some of the stories happened a long time ago, and therefore I can no longer remember their details. Others are of relatively recent origin. So if some of these stories bear only the year when it happened or its approximation, this is due to the limitation of my memory. But everything in this book is true and factual. Nothing has been invented or exaggerated.

When the impossible happens to any of us, what do we do? We either dismiss it as coincidence, a freak occurrence, or a product of our imagination. We seldom pause to investigate its underlying cause or principle. We have no time for this nonsense! our rational mind would always tell us. But it is precisely those things that defy rational explanation that we must investigate for they give us a clue as to the real workings of the universe. Newtonian physics, for example, which has dominated western science for several centuries is beginning to show some cracks under the onslaughts of modern quantum physics. The laws of Newtonian physics have been proven to be inapplicable in the smallest particles of matter, the so-called quantum level. At this level, another principle seems to be operative which borders on the mystical and the paranormal. On the quantum level, the laws of consciousness seem to be the key operative principle. And it is only now that we are beginning to understand it.

A few of the stories in this volume have appeared in other books I have previously written. I have indicated the references to them in the appropriate pages to guide those who may want to look at the details of the story. Many of them, however, are appearing in book form for the first time.

I have never claimed to have any extraordinary or unusual psychic or paranormal abilities. I still don’t. But as I began to look back at my psychic experiences from my childhood up to the present, I was amazed to realize that so many of them have actually taken place. When I started to list them down, they filled three typewritten pages.

Many of these experiences are not really very dramatic or outstanding. They can happen to anyone. I would only consider a few of them to be really extraordinary.

But the fact that these happened to an ordinary person like me who does not have extraordinary powers—in the first place, shows that these so-called powers can be present in or possessed by anybody, that it does not take an unusual person to be able to do or experience them. In other words, I consider these abilities really normal and not paranormal. They belong to the natural powers of every man and woman.

I originally called this book When the Impossible Happens because the incidents described here were not supposed to happen—and yet they did. They defy the known laws of nature and of science as science has come to be accepted and known by modern man.

These experiences have made me realize that psychic ability is a normal functioning of the human mind. They can be found in the ordinary day-to-day affairs of man, and only under extraordinary circumstances do we notice them, when they manifest in a special, unusual way. The everyday manifestation of psychic powers are often dismissed as irrational, unscientific or merely coincidence. But are they?

I have always been skeptical about claims of paranormal and psychic abilities unless I can see or prove them. I have a sneaking suspicion that the reason why so many paranormal or psychic things happen to me is to convince me that such things do exist.
