It was one of my deepest secrets. I was terrified of the darkness.
And I had my reasons.
I’m a street lawyer, Nicole Farmer, lawyer of the people and all that, so you’d think I’d understand this basic truth about the world: nothing is pure. But until I started getting cases on the Night docket, the world to me was made of darkness and light, night and day. The daytime was for work, the night was for going out, maybe drinking too much, hanging out with my best friend, Richard; his boyfriend; and our little crew of misfits and cretins. Trying to keep the inky blackness at bay.
But everything was changing, really fast.
On a Friday twilight, I was walking a little faster to get to my apartment before the lights went out. The streetlamps on the side streets leading from my office to my apartment are more or less burned out—the city of Amistad, Connecticut, is not known for its swanky pedestrian amenities, needless to say.
