    Dead Criminals - Errol Boucher

The portions at this restaurant were huge... that’s why he liked to hang out outside at this hour. People were always throwing away half their plates.

    That’s still good eatin’.

Digging through the trash that had just been dumped had rewarded Spencer with a nice helping of salad and a sizeable piece of meat still hanging off the bone.

    It’s a good night.

Spencer gathered his coat around himself as the twilight breeze wafted through his greasy hair. A smell of cigar smoke and cognac drifted through the air and into his flaring, thirsty nostrils.

She had a bracelet on her left wrist.

    Gold, sparkling with diamonds.

    Vanessa loved diamonds.

    No, Vanessa didn’t love anything.

She needed diamonds... required them like she could reap sustenance from them.

    Vanessa...

That name hadn’t stabbed his mind in quite some time.

Spencer remembered when he couldn’t go two minutes without thinking the name... and of the almost supernatural beauty attached to it.

    Vanessa...

That can’t be her. It can’t be. It’s just some rich broad with a similar bracelet.
