Celebre è questo Romanzo di una istitutrice; e non solo per sentito dire, come succede anche a molte, e preziose, opere letterarie; giacché esso è letto e ricercato continuamente, benché abbia quasi sessant'anni di vita. Non solo nei paesi anglo-sassoni, ma anche nei paesi latini, questo romanzo commovente e morale entrò in tutte le famiglie.
Perfino in Italia ne furono fatte parecchie traduzioni; ma poiché è impossibile rintracciarle, e madri e ragazze lo domandano, abbiamo creduto allestirne una nuova traduzione ed arricchirne questa Biblioteca Amena e precisamente quella parte di essa che comprende buone e piacevoli letture accessibili a tutti e a tutte.
Diciamo una parola intorno all’autrice.
Carlotta Bronte, nota sotto il pseudonimo letterario di Currer Bell, era la primogenita di tre sorelle che tutte si diedero alla letteratura e che tutte erano pur troppo tisiche. Il padre era un ministro anglicano. Carlotta, nata nel 1816 a Thornton (contea di York) ebbe una gioventù misera ed infelice, tentò di aprire una scuola con pensione, ma senza successo, pubblicò nel 1846 con le sorelle un volume di versi che passò inosservato. Ma l’anno dopo, 1847, uscì Jane Eyre o Memorie di una istitutrice, ed ebbe subito un successo colossale. Questo è rimasto il suo capolavoro; ma ebbero pure grande fortuna Shirley (1849), Violetta (52), il Professore (55); tutti apprezzati per il vigor dello stile, l’arditezza e l’elevatezza delle idee, e la penetrante analisi del cuore femminile. Nel 1854 sposò il pastore Nicholls, e nel 1855, quando pareva felice, morì del mal di petto che la travagliava fin dall’infanzia.
