An alphabetical list of these descendants has been compiled and is available free online. It is also included in the Index herein.

This family history is lovingly dedicated to my Mother, Clara Gerald Owen Venable, my grandfather, George Henry Owen, my great-grandfather, Dr. Pascal Harrison Owen, my great-great grandfather, Col. Lewis Owen, and all their OWEN ancestors, as well as all my OWEN cousins everywhere.

The author gratefully acknowledges cousins, both close and distant ones, as well as others who were kind enough to share information to be included in this compilation. Most of them are mentioned in footnotes. I wish to let anyone who was a source and who has been omitted know that such omission was not intentional but simply an oversight.

WILLIAM OWEN (1611-1702) AND ELIZABETH DAVIS

    FROM ENGLAND TO MASSACHUSETTS

    AND SOME OF THEIR DESCENDANTS

    By Nadia Rae Venable Calvert

Among the passengers from the port of London listed on the Hopewell with Captain Thomas Wood on 17 FEB 1635, bound for Barbados, were John Owen, age 20, and William OWEN, age 23 (born about 1611).

The record notes that the passengers had taken the oath of allegiance and supremacy.¹ Under the first charter of the Massachusetts colony, in order to be classified as a freeman, or member of the body politic, a man had to be admitted by the General Court and take the oath of allegiance to the established government. William Owen took the Freeman's Oath on 7 MAY 1651 in Braintree, MA.² He married on 29 JUL 1650³ in Braintree, Norfolk CO, MA, Elizabeth Davis (b.1629), also from London, daughter of Margery Willard and Dolar Davies. Margery Willard Davies was born in 1603² and died on 13 JUL 1669 in Braintree, Norfolk Co, MA). She had married as her second husband, Charles Grice.

Charles Grice of Braintree, in his Will of 9 NOV 1661 (probated on 12 NOV 1663), left all his estate both movable and immovable to his wife Margery for life; and at her death, William Owen to have all the movable estate for three years; and if, after notice was sent to England to Charles Grice's son, David, he did not come to New England for three years, and if also the nephews of Charles Grice did not come within that time, then the estate was to be confirmed forever to William Owen.⁴ Actually, Charles Grice was referring to the husband of his second wife's daughter by her first marriage, Elizabeth Davis, or his stepson-in-law. William Owen died on 17 JAN 1702 in Braintree, MA,⁵ and Elizabeth Davis Owen died 3 JUN 1702, being drowned with water through want of strength to wade through the same (as was judged) & also being impaired in her reason & understanding the 3d day of JUN 1702.

On 19 NOV 1707, Nathaniel Owen, with twenty-three others, signed the following compact:

We, whose names are hereunto subscribed, being of the N. Part of Braintree, do hereby signify that we have consented, and still do consent, that the people of the S. end of our town should be a congregation by themselves.¹⁷

In 1690, he served under Sir William Phipps in an unsuccessful expedition against Quebec; he died from smallpox on the return voyage and was buried at sea off Cape Ann.²² Hannah afterward in 1691, married Ebenezer's younger brother, Josiah, and they lived in R.I. It was illegal at that time in MA to marry an in-law, and on DEC 25, 1691, Hannah Belcher Owen was called before the Court of Assistants in Boston and charged with:

"for that by indirect meanes and by the connivance of some Josiah Owen and sd Hannah Owen procured a marriage, they being within the line of kindred of affinity forbidden marriage by the Word of God and the Statutes of England."

Hannah pleaded guilty by acknowledging that she was sd Josiah Owen's Brother's Relict. The Court thereupon directed that the relation should be broken off forthwith and that Hannah should on the following Sunday appear before the Braintree congregation and publically confess her transgression. The Court also informed the Braintree pastor. According to Henry W. Owen, Jr., in his 1935 unpublished Owen history manuscript, Rev. Moses Fiske, in the Braintree pastors' disciplinary record, noted that he, along with Major Quincy and Deacon Thompson, went to talk with Hannah and found Josiah with her. They attempted to convince Josiah to be repentant and recorded that he was obstinate, advised him to be in church the following Sunday. Rev. Fiske also noted that Josiah was urged by his father to comply. However, Josiah and Hannah left the area immediately, and Josiah was excommunicated at the service he missed.
