About this ebook

"Following on from the tragic events of Proteus Dark Empire, the team from the Tatara return back to Tokyo heartbroken however things never relent as the Earth is struck by a global volcanic event with earthquakes and tsunami that are threatening to send the world in to a nuclear winter.
With the arrival of Grand Council Solais and Regent Namah of the Aemon races aboard Miras to try to warn the people of Earth about the imminent Apeyron threat, you would think things couldn't get worse. They do get worse as Tie vanishes from the Symbitek office in Japan without a trace, leaving her friends worried about what the most unpredictable and dangerous member of their family may do.
Dragging Ella and her team in from the Dystopian Detective Agency in Manchester, they must try and find the errant nutcase before she unleashes chaos in the city however when the Apeyron defector Tath arrives on Earth there is rightful anger and bitterness considering what his people have done to Lunar.
It does not take long for our friends to realise that the global catastrophe facing their world has its origins in events light years away as they find six malfunctioning Apeyron devices scattered across the Earth. With Tath's help they must reset these devices except for one minor problem. They are located within active volcanoes.
Will Ella find Tie before she covers Tokyo in pink foam, will Tath find his road to redemption, will they managed to persuade the United Nations that the Apeyron threat is real and will they prevent Earth from being plunged in to a nuclear winter?"

Monsters of Tokyo is a fast paced action adventure with more than a few laughs along the way as everyone favourite enemies, Tie and Ella have to join forces in order to end a global catastrophe and finally convince Secretary Sanchez that the Apeyron threat is real in an adventure where our future hangs in the balance, even if Tie can't stop being a complete nutcase.

"For the people of this insignificant blue rock.

While I am not a ecomentalist running around predicting doom and gloom and while I do believe in my own way that this world's climate change is perhaps being overstated, knowing the fact we have left an ice age thousands of years ago and the world is naturally heating up, I do also know that we are responsible for the acceleration in the rise of temperatures on this world. This world does not belong to us though. It belongs to our children and their children to follow. Do we want to let our descendent pay for our stupidity and ignorance? Or do you want to believe some ignorant orange man who sees the world though carbon tinted glasses whose only interest is money? We stand on the edge of a swords blade. Which way do you want to let your children fall?

Into the darkness of a barren and bleak world or in to a brighter and prosperous future?"

    About the Author

    PREVIOUSLY

This is a story that needs a little background before you can start to understand it.

Realistically it should only begin roughly two years ago, but its roots lie back in the mists of time, over three hundred years before on a world far from here.

That world was Alphius Prime, a world not that dissimilar from Earth really, but there were some differences. The biggest one was that the dominant intelligent life there was not of a singular mind, but that of a partnership between two species, a host and a symbiote. Now I could explain how this partnership worked and about the history that led to this union between these two races, but suffice to say it was a fair and peaceful relationship that saw their world over thousands of years turned in to a Utopia.

Right up to the terrible moment they discovered their sun was on the verge of collapsing which would lead to all life being extinguished. As you can imagine that bit came as a nasty surprise.

Still, with time against them they all pulled together, created a fleet of living ships to carry their population to safety and to find a new world they could call home. To everyone's deep surprise they actually succeeded and with only days left, the fleet was nearly ready to depart.

Right up to the moment the planet closest to the sun was torn apart by tidal forces from their star which led to the sun collapsing ahead of time. Maybe you are starting to see a pattern here.

Of the five ships created only the smallest escaped, a ship called Koli which had only ten bonded individuals onboard. Those individuals never gave up hope, but everything was against them. They searched the stars, found a new world they called Beletrix and started the process of building a new home for their people in the hope that someone survived, but as the years passed their people never came. In the end they went back to the stars as their need grew desperate.

The symbiotes lives were long, thousands of years but their hosts were a different story. Even with their healing abilities, they could only live for five hundred years at the most and for some, time had already run out as they found themselves alone and resigned to synthetic life giving bodies.

With things at their darkest and their lives almost over, their quirky ship, Koli did something naughty. Using the last of her energy, she jumped them to a small world on one of the galaxy's spiral arms where they found what they had searched for. A race of creatures not only capable of accepting them, but also within their population a small number who had the telepathic gift they required to survive.

The survivors with the last of the energy almost gone travelled down to this new world in hope that the humans they had chosen would accept them and that is where this story, on Earth at least, starts.

Kind of depressing in a way, but don't worry, things get better.

It didn't take long for them to track each other down, reunite and much to their surprise their ship survived and was brought down to their new home, a facility called the Foundry. Thanks to a little bit of forward planning, these Vu'kno as they called themselves had ensured their human hosts quality of life, selling technological advances to a dozen companies globally, giving them more money than they knew what to do with, but as the last two survivors came home, they came with a message from Alphius Prime, sent three hundred years before. The message was a distress call from Terrik, the flagship of their fleet. They had beyond reason survived and were stranded in their home star system, most of their crew having been put in to stasis.

Finally knowing there were survivors they mounted a desperate rescue mission back to their home world where they found Terrik heavily damaged with over three hundred survivors on board. Using some pretty mind blowing technology, they got the survivors back to Earth and to a new facility they had created on an abandoned Island in the Caribbean, a place called Myra Island. There were tragic costs to their actions though but overall they were proud of what they had achieved. With the help of the United Nations, they rehomed their people, but things never go that easily.

With the cat out of the bag, and an alien species with mind bending technology, some governments around the world started playing shadow games, trying to steal their technology for their own sinister ends. They put up with it for a time, but eventually they could not ignore these incursions and a plan was made to return to the world Koli's crew had settled on for a time, the world called Beletrix.

However as the dust settled after Alphius Prime mission Koli revealed a secret that changed everything. Although they had assumed all their ships had been destroyed by the plasma storm, it seemed one of their Titan class ships may have escaped, a ship holding a third of their population, over twelve thousand souls aboard however they had no idea where this lost ship could be, even if they survived.

With pirates raiding their home world, Koli in critical condition following her rescue efforts and Terrik now resigned to an avatar body, the survivors realise that they needed to form a plan, one which would see Koli restored to heath and able to reach for the stars once more, but also to give Terrik a new body and a new life. They got a little more than they expected though in the wonderful and unexpected miracle they named Lunar, Terrik's twin sister. They returned to Beletrix and started to relocate their people and also defend their former home world from these pirate and everything was progressing as expected.

Then out of the blue a brand new Proteus ship arrives on Earth they realised to their surprise that survivors from the lost Titan class ship had found their way home. Further to their surprise this new ship, Saya was the first naturally born member of the Proteus family and they were begging for their help to cure a plague that had afflicted their people and rescue them from the world they had settled on.

Cutting that very long story short, they succeeded, curing the plague and relocating the survivors to the great city of Verlon on Beletrix. With thousands of survivors now restoring their civilisation, things were not so bleak as they start the long process of rebuilding their world.

Which only left what was still happening on Earth.

Earth for those who had taken human hosts was their home and while there had been tension, they could not deny that humanity had a lot to offer them, so roughly forty survivors bonded to their human partners remained here along with Koli, the eldest of the Proteus ships, who had adopted Earth as her home.

With the political tensions mounting as the world continues to change, our friends were growing nervous and a new plan was made. This plan would see them expanding Symbitek, the company they formed here, creating new facilities. Their original base is called the Foundry located just outside the city of New Oxford in Northern California, the Forge located in Manchester in the United Kingdom and finally there is the Tatara, located in the urban metropolis of Tokyo in Japan.

With their new homes established on Earth, Beletrix having settled down and their civilisation being restored, everything seems to be going well for our friends, but some things are never meant to last.

    * * *

There is a Darkness emerging from a Universe beyond ours, an eternal and endless force of ancient creatures who are returning to reclaim their Empire of five worlds.

They are called the Apeyron and they will lay waste to everything in their path.

Of course for the seven or so billion muddling apes on a small insignificant world on a spiral arm, the most they have to worry about is boiling their planet to death thanks to the small minded actions of a jumped up orange man who probably has no clue the galaxy watches his actions while shaking their heads in disapproval and consigning the human race to the foot notes of another failed species.

However what those apes don't realise as they look up to the stars is the terrible threat their world faces, as Earth as they call it is actually one of the Apeyron's worlds, part of their great Empire and without help, they will burn, not because of a rivalry, or a thirst for power. No, they will burn because they are infesting one of the Apeyrons worlds. They will be exterminated like vermin.

It is a good thing then that humanity has friends, even if the vast majority of their population do not know this, friends that are not entirely from this world.

For thousands of years, myth and legends have spoken of monsters in their midst, immortal and dark creatures many would call demons. Although in the modern age, humanity dismisses these legends as nothing more than the things of nightmares, they are very real having lived amongst humanity unseen and hidden as they tried to find their way back home, and in a way that is what makes them humanities friends more so than ever before. Their home world of Aemus also falls under the Apeyron's domain, their own people facing the same fate as humanity. Thanks to the Alphians and their unique living ships, they have returned to Aemus and reconnected the Earth with their home once more.

The Apeyrons have taken their first blood though. Lunar, the baby of the Proteus ships fought for life after being attacked by an Apeyron warship, the greatest minds of Beletrix clawing to try and save her life. They failed leaving heartbreak and pain for those that loved the playful and innocent young ship.

For most there was no time to grieve with the threat of the Apeyron's return imminent, but for some the pain was too much as they walked away to try and fix themselves.

Which of course brings us to right now, returning to that funny little rock spinning around a yellow sun out in the middle of nowhere. Back to the oblivious and sheltered world called Earth.

In a little while Earth will be paid a visit from the behemoth of the Proteus ships, the Titan class Miras with her precious cargo. Grand Council Solais of Beletrix and Regent Namah of the Aemon people have come to warn humanity of the threat they face and try to negotiate with the humans in order to aid their efforts to halt the war with the Apeyrons before it starts.

However right now, if you were to look down on Tokyo, and if you had the right equipment, you would see an inter dimensional breach opening in a small private facility on the outskirts of this massive city. A quick search on the internet would find the location of this breach in the fabric of reality is at a place called the Tatara, which if you know your Japanese, means the Furnace.

If you were to look inside, you would see three people returning to this world, beyond the event horizon, the world of Beletrix. These people look all but human, unless of course you were to take a closer look using medical technology not readily available on this world. If you did have that technology though you would find two of them have small yet amazing creatures nestled in their torsos, the alien symbiotes known as Vu'kno.

If you were then to take a step back, you would realise all three of them were miserable, heartbroken and exhausted.

And that is where this story begins.

    PROLOGUE

As she closed her eyes she was back there, the place she didn't want to remember.

All of her friends working frantically as they grasped for victory, clawing desperately at hope. She knew what would happen next, these events playing over and over in her mind as she looked to Tioli.

Confirmed. Primary neural nexus is purged, her old friend shouted out, her voice almost seeming to echo in her skull and then it was her turn.

Reconnect the neural clusters to her nervous system and prepare to clear the shunt on the supplementary cluster, her own voice echoed out in her head as the team jumped.

Clusters cleared, getting minimal autonomic responses, Lyphius said right on cue, as for the first time she had that horrible feeling of hope.

Supplementary cluster reconnected, Coras added as events played out like a broken recording as they all waited to see what would happen next, the hope Lunar would right herself and find her way back and of course she knew what would happen next as for the first time their stupid and ignorant plan showed its first sign of success.

She is migrating back, Coras confirmed, her voice bitter sweet in her mind as she waited for Lyphius to add her own voice to this.

Confirmed. Her neural nets are reinitialising. We have twenty percent higher brain functions and rising.

She didn't trust it though. Chloe often said there was a pessimistic streak in her at times, but it wasn't pessimism. It was being realistic and with a plan that involved sticky tape, bubblegum and thrown together equipment as a Hail Mary play, this was about as insane as it could get.

Okay, let's not get cocky here, her own voice echoed out. Keep monitoring everything.

She looked to Terrik, Miras and Koli. This was the hardest part of the memory. Seeing the relief on their faces as they accepted it may just work but it was never going to end like that. It couldn't end like that.

Cluster twenty three has just destabilised, Coras shouted as things started to fall apart. Pathways are degrading.

Reinitialise the cluster now! her voice barked out, feeling herself running over to the terminal and checking the data, but even before Coras spoke, her eyes had seen the terrible truth.

I can't. It's completely depolarised, Coras stammered confirming what she was reading on the screen.

Detecting myelin sheath degradation throughout that cluster. It's shorting out, Tioli added in panic.

It was right there. Right at that moment she knew they had lost. How stupid to cling on to hope when she knew it was hopeless, but nobody would give up. They all tried, they all failed.

Damn... Lyphius muttered as everything started to fall apart. Clusters seven and twelve are showing signs of a similar collapse. She is going in to cascading neural failure.

What's going on?! Terrik called out as the whole group went in to automatic pilot, her words cutting in to her deeper than a knife.

This was not a science project anymore. It was Terrik's little sister.

The others tried everything they could, but she knew it was too late. Lyphius had said those awful words. Cascading neural failure.

All she could do was watch this little one die. They had tried everything, done all they could and even with their combined knowledge, their skills, their genius they never stood a chance.

Then came that moment she did not want to accept.

    The moment when Lunar died.

She opened her eyes abruptly, the view of Tokyo coming back in to view as she took a deep breath. She had come home to try and deal with this, to process what these monsters had done to her little girl. She had been there when her little miracle came to be, seen that tiny little ship playing with her sister in the tank. She had been there for her as she developed, grew up in to that conflicted yet so sweet battle ship, helped her understand what she was, but more importantly who she was.

    She had even named her.

Now she was gone and for the first time in so long she was lost in a sea of pain and heartbreak.

She could make the Apeyron pay for what they did, show them the fury of genius, tear their Empire down piece by piece until they begged for the mercy they refused to show, but it would not bring Lunar back.

As the city lights twinkled in the dark, there was a horrible empty feeling inside her chest, numb and emotionless. She was lost, and she didn't know how to find her way back.

    CHAPTER ONE

    No Respite

    The Forge, Manchester, United Kingdom

She glanced at Amy as she tensed up before launching herself forward over the office. Scrambling over the floor Amy swatted her as they ran past Ella's office as she grabbed a folder and threw it at Amy as they both charged towards their target. Launching herself over a chair she reached the desk first picking the phone up doing a little happy dance of victory as Amy pouted.

Dystopian Detective Agency, how can I help? she announced triumphantly as Amy mooched around to her chair flopping down in it and folding her arms.

Miss Hillier? the vaguely familiar voice of Father Ryan questioned in her ear.

Yes Father, this is Shae. How can I help? she questioned glancing to Amy pensively.

Miss Carr said if anything strange was to happen with the Obelisk I should contact you immediately. I have to report it is behaving strangely, he replied to her surprise.

    Define strange Father?

"It's rather hard to describe, but some American tourists were on Tatterslong's village green an hour or so ago and I got talking to them. They were asking if the light show was a normal thing. When I went up to the Obelisk to investigate, I found something I struggle to describe. The best I can come up with is it is almost similar to the northern lights, wisps of energy dancing above it with a purple hue. I thought I
