About this ebook
Lukas Zbinden leans on the arm of Kâzim, as they walk slowly down the stairway towards the door of his old people's home. Step by step, the irrepressible Lukas recounts the life he shared with his wife Emilie and his son. She loved to walk in the countryside; he loved towns and meeting strangers. Different in so many ways, what was the secret of their life-long love? And why is it now so hard for him to talk to his son?
Gradually we get to know a man with a twinkle in his eye and learn the captivating story of this man, his late wife, their son and the many people he has met along the way. Zbinden's Progress is heart-rending, heart-warming and hilarious. --- Winner of the Bern Literature Prize 2010

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What a delightful little book. A cliché I know to describe something thus but it is. Novella length but in it way epic. Mr Zbinden's progress is down the stairs in his care home supported by young assistant Kazim who is the recipient of reminiscences about his life and especially about his wife. Walking has solved all life's problems for Mr Zbinden and he's keen that others, including Kazim, should see the light and follow his example. The not quite random thoughts of an old man are both enlightening and endearing. Not a book about walking in the sense of tramping the countryside but there are plenty of little gems for the probably more than a small number who share Mr Zbinden's faith in the power of a good walk to do you, and the world, good.
