Reviews for J.P. Donleavy

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book consists of articles and essays apparently written for previous publication, although not attributed here. It is divided into nine sections roughly by subject. The Dublin section notes “you can still listen to the priceless form of native entertainment, the blarney” and “a drinking premises is never more than sixty seven paces away.” Presumably there’s a correlation. There are reminisces of Donleavy’s childhood in the Bronx and a couple of writer with a chip on his shoulder essays. He writes of his adopted home of Ireland, where “insanity in this place is less noticeable in the people than it is anywhere else on earth.”Donleavy’s trademark humor is prevalent, as it is in everything he wrote. He also makes some serious, and relevant points. “The civility of a nation can be ruined by just one man’s rudeness” says Donleavy, the native New Yorker.
