- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Such an unlikely story of a good Muslim widow taking a young lover, a criminal from the wrong side of the tracks who nonetheless ignited her desires in ways she never imagined possible. The jarring contradictions between the two, between religious and gender norms and expectations in modern Nigeria make for an enlightening read with surprising finds popping up everywhere. The fact that this novel is written by a man who gets into the core of Binta’s feelings and reveals them so exquisitely is truly amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed it although I wished some of the Hausa texts were translated. Highly recommended.
