About this ebook
Winter 1888. At an asylum in the English countryside, a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper kills an orderly and flees into the rain-soaked night. His distraught keepers summon the Lady Vivienne Cumberland—who's interviewed their patient and isn't sure he's a man at all. An enigmatic woman who guards her own secrets closely, Lady Vivienne knows a creature from the underworld when she sees one. And he’s the most dangerous she's ever encountered.
As Jack rampages through London, Lady Vivienne begins to suspect what he's searching for. And if he finds it, the doors to purgatory will be thrown wide open...
Across the Atlantic, an archaeologist is brutally murdered after a Christmas Eve gala at the American Museum of Natural History. Certain peculiar aspects of the crime attract the interest of the Society for Psychical Research and its newest investigator, Harrison Fearing Pell. Is Dr. Sabelline's death related to his recent dig in Alexandria? Or is the motive something darker?
As Harry uncovers troubling connections to a serial murder case she’d believed was definitively solved, two mysteries converge amid the grit and glamor of Gilded Age New York. Harry and Lady Vivienne must join forces to stop an ancient evil. The key is something called the Thirteenth Gate. But where is it? And more importantly, who will find it first?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A perfect novel for mystery lovers. The Thirteenth Gate is another successful work by Kat Ross that really makes me wonder how she was able to write this kind of book. Everything seems perfect as it is; the way it was written, how the characters acted on every chapter, and how each scene was organized. Her novels never failed to amaze me.On this second installment of Dominion Mysteries, we follow Harry and John on their adventures. More murders are happening around them, and it only means that they have more mysteries to solve. And in this story, I was able to connect again with the other characters from her other series, The Fourth Element. I was just glad to see them moving here again.I like how I could go back in time as well as get involved in solving mysteries by just reading this book. Another thing that made me like this more is by having some of the supernatural creatures in the story like demons. I like everything here literally. Maybe because I had read her other series too, that’s why I could go well on the flow of the story – which I suggest you read it also so you could fully enjoy this book – and I could connect very well with the characters.Talking about the characters, I really like how they were portrayed in this novel. Their bond and how they interacted with one another just made me feel like I’m also talking and helping them solve those mysteries. There was also a little romance on it, well, maybe there was none, but I could feel it even if it was not said there.Overall, this is an exciting and engaging story that almost has everything – mystery and suspense, historical locations and ambiance, and of course, the creepy supernaturals touch on it. I’m really recommending this book to everyone.Disclaimer: I received a readers copy from Xpresso Book Tours.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5There are two story lines that are happening simultaneously in The Thirteenth Gate but there is also a point where they intersect. The investigation of partners Lady Vivienne Cumberland and Alec Lawrence take place in London. They are after a man that Lady Vivienne suspected as being Jack the Ripper but lacked enough proof to bring him to trial. Without enough proof, the suspect was placed in a private mental hospital for close observation to determine his mental stability. Although Lady Vivienne had insisted that he was a dangerous criminal and that he should be dealt with as such, her pleas were ignored. Now an orderly has been killed and the man suspected as being Jack the Ripper is once again on the loose. Except he is truly not a man at all. More like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The other storyline in this book involves the investigation of partners Harrison “Harry” Fearing Pell and John Weston. Harry and John were introduced in the prequel to this story, The Daemoniac. Harry has been working as consulting detective and John is a med student who has been friends with Harry for a long time. Together they had brought closure to the case of the Mr. Hyde murders and now Harry has finally achieved one of her dreams, to be an investigator for the S.P.R., Society for Psychical Research. Now Harry is under pressure to prove that she is more than a one hit wonder. Both Harry and John are still recovering from the horrors of the Mr. Hyde murders and when they were brought in to investigate the grisly murder of an archeologist, they quickly realized that there was more at play here.As the teams follow the clues it quickly becomes clear that there is a supernatural force that has been manipulating events with a larger masterplan in mind. I was kept on the edge of my seat as the characters kept being beset by misfortune and at each encounter were literally fighting for their lives. This story was definitely full of twists and turns. Even when there was a great reveal there was still more story left to play out. Nothing is certain as the story slowly unfolds and all I can say is that by the end you will want the story to continue. If you have not read any of this Author’s previous books you might feel a bit confused at the start of the story as there is no big info dump. There is already a history between the main characters and you will feel like you are “walking” into a story already in play. With that said, do not worry, the information will come gradually and by the end all will be explained. If you are interested in reading the books with these characters beforehand then I would recommend reading The Daemoniac for Harry and John’s adventures. For Lady Vivienne and Alec, you would read The Fourth Element series.I found this story quite enjoyable without having read The Fourth Element series. After having read The Thirteenth Gate, I would highly recommend reading all of Author Kat Ross’s books. Her characters really come to life, her plots and sub-plots tie together nicely, and the writing itself is very vivid, a most enjoyable read. I enjoyed the magic, gore, mystery, and gritty feel that I experienced while reading this book. I encourage you to pick up a copy of The Thirteenth Gate and give it a read, you will love reading this amazing story. This review is based on a complimentary book I received from Xpresso Book Tours. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I was a little disappointed by The Daemoniac, the first book in the new series by Kat Ross. I mean just a teeny-tiny bit disappointed, afterall it’s still Kat Ross and she’s amazing. But……… after reading the Forth Element series I was expecting more fantasy, more super natural. In the Daemoniac almost everything “super natural” ends up with an explanation. It’s much more like a Sherlock Holmes novel. But my disappointment ended with The Thirteenth Gate. Which brings in characters and lore from the Forth Element dropping them into 1888 London and New York. It was a rip-roaring adventure tale filled with mystery and danger.(I do not think it’s necessary for you to have read the Forth Element books in order to enjoy this book. However, it will add a lot to the background story.)I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but I will say that it kept me glued to my Kindle and I finished the book in only two days. The characters, the pace, the multiple threads all drive the story forward and I was almost afraid to blink in case I would miss something. The settings chosen for the book are grand and gritty and the contrast really adds to the action. The setting for the climax is so creepy that it gave me goose bumps. Just, wow, what a choice of setting and characters and action! Two weak points in the book; One do we have to have Lady Vivienne’s smoking thrust into our face every other page? It just took me out of the story and distracted from an otherwise very deeply drawn character. Two Harry is a little too much like Nancy Drew. Even the way her hair is described made me think of the Girl Detective.Bottom Line:I loved it! The Thirteenth Gate fired on all cylinders, and kept the excitement coming. I hope we get a third Dominion Mystery because she certainly left it wide open for more adventure. This book totally made up for the slight disappointment I felt when reading the first book… and then some.I received this book free though Xpresso Book Tours.

This was an enjoyable and well-plotted paranormal historical mystery
