About this ebook

The book "Naked Thoughts" is a compilation of vignettes, written in real time, of my experiences as I observe the world while bypassing that filter between my thoughts and what spills onto the page. There is an air of nihilism and abstraction about them. An air of a wandering mind that is cynical, introspective, and observant. An air of humor in the knowledge that the world is a comedy, if not the laugh out loud kind. When the series is completed it will include a dramatic photograph reenacting scene for each Naked Thought mirroring its tone and mood. I am sharing these vignettes in volumes of 10 with you to keep me inspired and to keep my feet moving and the wheels turning.

This book is not meant to be read in one sitting, though you certainly can. Instead read and absorb when you need a moment of escape. You’ll be surprised at the moments you find profound. When you’re done, let me know your thoughts. Let the world know!

Well... people have been telling me to put down the camera and use a pen to express myself instead. I'm not sure if they're telling me I'm not so good with the heavy glass thing or if the pen is what suits me. I've been tag-lining myself "Veteran • Artist • Writer • Photo-er" for a while now and I guess it's high time to begin filling the last 25% of the claim. What am I doing with the pen (keyboard): two collections of shorts. One, Dream Daggers And Imaginary Friends, is a collection of my ridiculous and vivid dreams. The other, NakedThoughts, is something else... vignettes? An exercise in mindfulness? It's hard to label that one. It is funny, though. They tell me it is so. NakedThoughts - Jason Matias

    Preface

I’m writing this preface in a choir class. No, I don’t sing. I haven’t read a sheet of music in ten or more years. Now-a-days I’m a substitute teacher. Over the past few years I’ve been a dozen things: foreman in a popcorn factory, worker bee in a bindery, quality assurance lead in an aerospace manufacturing firm and an unemployed art salesman. All that after a career humping bombs in the Air Force. Now I’m becoming a writer. Becoming because, until I can get an idea to go from my head into someone else’s without misperception and confusion, I’ll never be finished crafting this skill. Having been a teacher at both high school and college level, I know in my deepest depths and can attest, with evidence, that getting an idea into some people’s skulls couldn’t be done even if I wrote it on a bullet before sending it in.

This choir is currently murdering Hallelujah. Like, heel-stomping Hallelujah’s face in the gravely mud, murder. It’s June and even if the students aren’t half as tired as the staff, they have still had enough time to learn how to make music together. Still, it’s somehow pleasant to hear live music. When sound goes straight from vocal cord to eardrum, music really is alive. Even if it’s a little bit ugly, it’s a welcome companion.

You know, that’s a lot like life and the experiences I’m sharing in Naked Thoughts. Life rarely shares her beautiful side but she’s always the best companion we’ve got.

I think that is what I do. I see the ugly side of life. Not the murder-stomping black side or even anything close to so deep a shadow. I record the ugly that doesn’t get noticed. The face that disappears in a crowd. Obscure as such
