About this ebook

In recent times, mobile network users around the world has been experiencing a high drop call rate. This guide "Mobile Network Optimization" gives an in-depth practical knowledge with captured scenarios for fresher's and experienced telecom engineers, to interpret and analyze 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA parameters on TEMS Investigation for drop call rate optimization. This guide covers RF drive testing for dropped calls and single site verification (SSV) for WCDMA radio network optimization (RNO).

It is a career pathway for physics, computer, electrical and electronic undergraduates/graduates. This guide gives an equivalent internship practical knowledge in telecommunications industry for both undergraduates and graduates.

Mobile Network Optimization guide is written in plain English and gives fresher's an equivalent industry practical knowledge and skills in 2G/3G network optimization.

CHAPTER 1

Introduction to Mobile Network Optimization

1.1 Mobile Network Optimization

In real world, before making a live network, we go through the first stage which is planning of the network. When a network become live, that is, when it begins to deliver services to the users, its performance needs to be checked and this results in optimization. Therefore, optimization is the tuning of an existing network to make the system work more effectively.

Radio Frequency (RF) Optimization is a process through which different parameters of radio base station (RBS) are changed in order to improve the coverage area and improve quality of signal. Many RF parameters like (RxLev, RxQual, FER, BER, SQI, TxPower, RSSI, SIR, BLER, RSCP, Ec/No etc...) are constantly monitored and necessary changes proposed in order to keep this parameters or KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) in agreed limits with the mobile operator.

GSM network consists of different cells and cell transmit signals to and receive signals from the mobile station. For a proper working of base station, many parameters are defined before functioning the base station such as the coverage area of a cell depends on different factors including the transmitting power of the base station,
