      In all her years at Earthfleet Academy, Jane Carter never thought she’d be the first human to be sold at an alien slave auction.

      The door to her cell oscillated open, and two reptilian guards stepped in. As a certified xenologist, she wasn’t supposed to see her captors as hideous, but there simply was no other way to describe them. Their wicked yellow claws and thick brown scales gave them the appearance of something from a medieval depiction of hell, and their horned faces only added to the effect. Jane grew tense the moment they strode inside.

      Hoo-man! the first guard snarled in the local alien trade language. He poked at her with his assault rifle and motioned to the door.

      Jane rose gracefully to her feet, preserving as much of her dignity as she could. The slavers certainly hadn’t made it easy. Her hands and feet were chained, her neck firmly collared.
