    About the Author

To my beautiful man and fellow traveler, Warren.

    Chapter One

I think Prague is for lovers, said Ben. He’d just complained about how milky the coffee was in the Czech Republic, and now this. Yeah. Prague is the place you take your one true love.

    Then what’s Paris? I asked.

That’s easy, replied Lucy. Paris is where you have a steamy affair.

Then I guess Amsterdam is for singles to get up to mischief, I added.

My friends stared into space as if they were pondering the meaning of life, while their goulash was getting cold. I looked at my food. The enticing mix of hearty cuisine slopped on my plate had me slobbering like a mutt. My knife cracked the surface of my deep-fried potato rösti, and as my fork made its way to my lips, it had to stop so I could take in the odor of this salty indulgence.

Really, Nathan! Lucy glared at me as if she was watching some kinky sex act even she’d disapprove of. Just eat the bloody thing. I swear sex and food stimulate the same part of your brain.

I crunched hard, making sure my grin reached both ears. She rolled her eyes and shoved a huge chunk of carrot and beef in her mouth before smirking. Strange violin music came from above. As I glanced up at the tinny speaker, the middle-aged waitress who looked as if she should cut down on sampling the food sidled up to me.

    You like?

She pointed to the speaker. I wanted to say it sounded like someone was murdering that musical instrument, but I decided to keep my mouth shut.

My son. He practice music. Good, eh? The three of us nodded. I make louder. She marched away proudly.

Eat quickly, said Ben. That music sounds like someone is strangling a cat.

I never pictured a woman her age wearing lilac, stated Lucy.

Well, we are away from the tourist spots, I said. You have to expect local charm when we eat in this district.

And the food is better, said Ben. He waved the chunk of meat on his fork to emphasize his point. He chewed, swallowed, and then pointed at us with his knife. What’s been your favorite city on this trip?

    Barcelona, Lucy replied.

Yes, I agree, I said. Amsterdam was fun. Hey, it was a lot of fun. But Barcelona is a true party town.

    Plus you got laid there.

Yes, I did. Another notch on my bedpost.

That’s one less than me. Ben was keeping score.

One less? You’ve had two encounters?

Well, if we’d stop going to gay clubs, maybe I could be part of this conversation, Lucy said, shaking her head while stirring her gravy.

I know we both got laid in Amsterdam, Ben, but where else did you get laid? I asked.

I got laid twice in Amsterdam, he replied. You see, there was one night I couldn’t sleep and…

Do you guys ever give it a rest? Lucy asked.

Do we really need to answer that? I replied. So, Ben, where did you find him?

He panted like a puppy. All I’ll say is, a leather club opened my eyes.

You went to the leather club without me?

Yeah, said Lucy. You went to the leather club without us?

Well, when a boy wants to play hard, you know, friends are better left behind. Besides, you two were asleep.

How do you know? Did you check on us?

Of course not. What if you were awake?

I raised my wine glass. To my favorite slutty workmate and friend. My buddies also raised their glasses. And to you too, Lucy, who gets plenty of sex back home in Sydney.

    She grinned wickedly.

You could have got laid in Berlin, said Ben.

True, I added. There was an experience I’m sure you’d never get offered back home.

No way! That pierced guy was freaky.

    But he wanted you.

    "Yeah, but for what?

He had more holes than a target at a shooting range, Ben added.

Even lilac lady laughed. We downed our drinks before she brought another bottle.

Just think, said Lucy. Tomorrow we’re traveling home.

Don’t talk about it, I replied. I don’t want this holiday to end.

I’m glad we’re finishing our trip in a cheap country, Ben added. My credit card is maxed out.

    Me too.

    Me three, said Lucy.

I don’t know why you’re complaining. You own the café we work in, boss. You make all the money. I’m dreading seeing my bank statement.

Now, now, Nathan. I promised I’d get Ben to teach you how to make coffee. I need another barista. It pays better than being a waiter.

    I half smiled.

And I know you’re just as fussy about coffee as I am, Ben declared. You’ll have those office workers lining up for their morning hit of caffeine. You’ll be a great pusher.

    Pusher? I asked.

Yeah. Their addiction and your will to supply an aromatic brew of premium roasted liquid dependence will make you a top-class dealer.

He’s right, said Lucy. Morning coffee is what keeps my café afloat.

I just have to get used to being a morning person, I admitted. But still, it’s a sacrifice I’m prepared to make for better pay. I refilled our glasses and raised mine. A toast to a wonderful couple of friends and a wonderful three weeks away from work!

Yay, Europe, said Ben. Well, at least the little we’ve seen of it. He clinked my glass.

I’ll drink to that. Lucy swirled her wine before she drank. And you guys have been great travel companions.

    Thank you, boss.

And will you two stop calling me boss? I’d like to think I’m more to you than that.

    "You are,
