They fell in love in the space program, and they stayed divorced in space. Now, Jeremy and Catriona sat across from each other in Colony One’s blood lab, forced together again. The huge steel ring of a spacecraft spun them without a care. Jeremy swore the centripetal force had shuffled him and his ex together on purpose. For eight years it had conspired to do so. Today, with the first colony craft about to land on an exoplanet, he had to sit alone with Catriona again.

Each of them had a red IV line slowly drawing their blood donations. They sat in their sterile underwear, awkwardly finding other things to look at. The waist-high blood collection machine had the aesthetic of an Earth trash can. Jeremy memorized its spinning routines in his first five minutes of staring. He suspected Catriona did too.

No matter how standard-issue their scant clothes, or how necessary the conservation of cloth, Jeremy had to will his half-erection down. He stared at the white walls and prayed the machine would draw blood straight from his groin.
