      His small daughter Liza stood in front of him in her nightdress, her fists planted firmly on her hips. Her underlip began to pout and she held up her left wrist to show him the minder flashing its silent notice.

      Vartan shook himself. He’d lost track of time, deep in his writeup. He had to think about what she meant.

      Oh, that. His eyes glanced at the object on his desk. Are you sure you still want it?

      I need it, she said impatiently.

      I see. It would make an odd contrast to her stuffed animals, but it wouldn’t be the first peculiar artifact in her bedroom collection.
