    Christmas In D.C. - C.A. Tibbitts

    Chapter One

Naomi stared across the stage, where Professor William Janson was smiling and shaking hands with every student that walked past him. They paraded across the stage on their way to retrieve an empty padded folder, which would someday soon hold their college diplomas.

Professor Janson was the most-sought-after law class professor on campus. Popular not only for his classes, but also his boyish good looks, he held the attention of several woman...and some men. Around forty years old, standing over six feet tall, with curly brown hair, blue eyes, wire-rimmed glasses, and a fit body that was always clad in a tailored suit, the professor looked like a model for a clothing magazine.

Naomi was so enamored with his looks in the beginning that she had almost turned down the opportunity to be his assistant. She did not think she could concentrate on her studies and manage to work with him on a daily basis. However, when asked, the first word that came out of her mouth was yes, and the rest was history.

Four years later, she knew Will as a friend as well as a professor. He was a gentleman, and the lawyer part of his personality led him to always respond thoughtfully, never with a harsh or misplaced word. A rarity in the legal profession.

The student ahead of Naomi walked across the stage, so she took a deep breath and waited her turn. After several dead-end jobs, she had applied for scholarships and financial aid, and had finally made college a reality. A freshman at thirty-one and graduating at thirty-five. Now with a bachelor's degree as a paralegal, Naomi had considered applying to law school, but she was not sure she had the passion for that many more years of classes, not to mention the bar exam. Smiling, she walked toward Will and held her hand out to shake. He took her hand in his warm one and clasped his other over the top, and his blue eyes sparkled behind his glasses. The familiar scent of his cologne was both calming and depressing. The thought of this being the last time she saw him broke her heart.

Call me in the morning, he murmured above the incessant clapping of the audience of students' family members and friends.

Naomi gave him a nod before he let go of her hand and she proceeded to shake hands with the dean.

NAOMI WOKE UP WITH a sugar hangover. All she had the night before was Congrats to the Graduates cake and plenty of soda at the college-sponsored reception. Deciding the old adage of hair of the dog was appropriate (though that was supposed to be for alcoholic hangovers), she quickly got ready for the day and went out for donuts and coffee.

As she ate, she continued to look at her watch, unsure what time would be good to call Professor...to call Will. She had graduated now, and while he was still a professor, he had nothing left to teach her.

At nine o'clock, she finally dialed, anxiously needing to know what he wanted to talk with her about.

He answered on the second ring. I have a job opportunity for you, Nay.

Wow, things were already different. He had never called her anything but Naomi, or Ms. Hamilton. Ehm...hello, Will, she found herself saying with a grin.
