    THE IMPORTANCE OF PARABLES

Merriam-Webster defines a parable as a short fictitious story that illustrates a moral attitude or a religious principle Wikipedia defines a parable as a succinct story ...which illustrates one or more instructive principles or lessons.....it is a type of analogy. In this book, the interpretation of the opening of one of the seven seals described by the Book of Revelation is based upon one of the many parables which Christ told to those to whom He preached.

The parables found in scripture demonstrate, in story form, many principles of behavior and contain a warning should we reject those principles. They help us clarify other areas of scripture as we seek a greater understanding of what God wants us to know.

When Jesus was asked why He taught in parables, He explained that He wanted to help those to whom He spoke to gain a better understanding of His message and learn how to apply the principles that His message brought them. Matthew 13:13 tells us, Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing, see not; and hearing, they hear not, neither do they understand. Parables allowed Christ to deliver His message without any judgment rendered or perceived, and do so in a gentle and non-confrontational manner. This allowed Him to plant a seed that could germinate in the soul and eventually bear fruit.

Jesus explained that those who understood His parables were truly blessed, and says in Matthew 13:16: But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Also referring to His parables, Christ said in Matthew 13:35, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. This statement tells us how important the lessons of His parables are, and that much of what He offered through this form of communication was and may continue to be hidden from many people. His message still stands however, for those who are willing to ready themselves to become a part of the Bride of Christ. Thus, when we examine these parables we need to search carefully and with an open mind for the lessons that Christ wanted us to glean from them.

Many easily accept the warning in the parable of the five wise and the five foolish virgins who were waiting for the Bridegroom and only the five wise ones were prepared to accompany Him. But few accept the parable of the rich man and the beggar as actually depicting the thoughts, actions and conversations of those who have died.

Parables reveal the truth and their story form preempts our tendency to become defensive and angry, feel hurt and chastised, or no longer be willing to listen when we require improvement. They bring a message more gently than other forms of explanation because they cause us to think and provide us with the time to mull over a message and recognize the need to apply it to our own lives.

As you read the following chapters, do so with the presumption that every word of a parable is accurate and important, apply it to the scripture and premise introduced in this book, and I think that you will be amazed by what you discover!
