    Prologue: Death and Living…

It was a cold, rainy night when Francesca Lucas’s life changed forever. The 18-year old girl was walking alone along the drenched streets of Rome. It was the year 1900, and when she looked around her, she found several people looking as hungry as she was. Men and women, young and old, it mattered not. The country was in massive debt, and the people of the great city of Rome were suffering because of it.

Francesca wandered the streets aimlessly, not knowing where she was going but knowing she needed food and warmth. The cold bit into her bones like a great white shark that bites into the side of a fisherman’s boat. She’d been wandering the streets for weeks now, after her mother and father had been killed by thieves looking to steal her family’s meager food supplies. She’d been orphaned and left alone, with not a soul to call a friend or family. She’d sat with her parents corpses cradled in her arms for hours, her body wracked with great sobs as she mourned over her parents. They had been an unfortunate casualty of the poverty stricken country she lived in, and soon she had been turned into the beggars she’d always gone out of her way to help as a child.

Growing up, Francesca had been born into a moderately wealthy family. Her father had been the owner of an exporting business, having amassed a small fortune trading meats from local farmers to other parts of the world. However the collapse of the economy in Italy and the land of the farmers producing less product had forced her father’s company to dwindle down, and the wealth she had enjoyed for years had disappeared as well. Francesca had grown accustomed to beautiful gowns, grand parties featuring her father’s business partners, and business trips with her father, getting to see the world while traveling in style. Yet her father’s losses had diminished their funds, and they had been surviving on the little savings they’d’ had since Giovanni Giolitti had become the first Prime Minister of Italy.

With cold rain pelting her back and head, Francesca looked around and found a relatively dry alley, and darted inside. It was nearly midnight, and as she listened to the shivered cries of children and the angry yelling of parents desperate to find their kids food, Francesca walked down the darkening alley, her hunger and pain numbing her to the danger she was walking into.

After taking a few steps inside, a pair of strong hands wrapped themselves around her waist, pulling her deeper into the alley as one of the hands wrapped around her mouth, muffling her scream. She thrashed about in the attacker’s arms, kicking out at the air and trying to bite the hand of the stranger, but his skin was rock hard and she failed to wiggle out of his grasp.

Shh, hush now darling, the man whispered, his hands squeezing her tightly. I can sense your fear, but you need not fear any longer. The hunger and pain will subside shortly, beautiful one, for you see, I too am hungry, but you can provide me with much needed substance.

Francesca’s eyes widened as she was turned around, and stared straight into a nightmarish face. A pair of striking red eyes pierced through her own emerald green ones, and long fangs grew out of the large man’s face, liquid dripping off of the tips like a viper before it launches at its prey. He caressed her face like a child playing with a doll. The man’s long black hair wrapped around her face as the creature leaned in, and before she could attempt to scream, it sunk its teeth into her neck.

She tried to struggle, but soon the pain subsided, and a kind of euphoria engulfed her in its warm embrace. The hunger and pain subsided, just as the man had said, and although a part of her knew she should be fighting, the pleasure coursing through her body fought the urge, and soon she found herself beginning to drift off into a dark slumber. She is nearly gone forever, but before she can fade away a bright glean of silver pierces the cold night air, and the creature drops her down onto the uneven cobblestone street, hissing and backing up and away from her.

Soon the pleasure is replaced with a burning pain, and she is brought back to the present. She held her neck, and cried out in agony as she turned to see a tall man with the purest silver hair and sun-kissed skin walk into the light of the alley, a bloodied sword in his hand and a long, ragged scar across his face. He looked down at her as he walked past, looking at her with cool, piercing eyes that seemed to be hiding a dark and saddened past. He looked at her, and then turned his attention back to her attacker, his look of concern replaced by cold calculation and determination.

Abominio, the creature hissed, his native Italian tongue spatting at what he considered an abomination.

I told you I’d come, Lorenzo. This is the end, the man with the sword said calmly. The creature hissed, and in a show of bravado charged at the man. However, just as quickly as he appeared, the man lashed out in one swift motion, and soon the creatures head rolled along the cobblestone street, blood swirling around the body as it landed with a thud. Francesca looked up at the man, fear and curiosity crossing over her face. She wanted to run, to scream, but she
