Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870), who is often referred to as père (father) in order to distinguish him from his son, was a French writer, close to Romanticism. The son of a general of Afro-Caribbean origin, he began working from a young age before directing his attention to writing. He quickly found success with his vaudevilles and historical dramas. He then wrote an impressive number of works, including Henry III and His Courts (1829) and Kean (1836). But it was his series of historical sagas that truly brought him posterity, particularly the trilogy of The Three Musketeers in 1844 or The Count of Monte Cristo the same year.
