Introduction
Self-publishing has been taking the publishing world by storm, allowing unknown authors and poets to bypass the tedious and morale-defeating process of submitting manuscripts to a number of large publishing houses only to get a rejection letter you had to wait 6 months for in the mailbox.
And thank goodness! With platforms like CreateSpace, Lulu, Blurb, and several others, why would you put yourself through the incredibly discouraging process of trying to find an agent or a traditional publisher?
Of course, self-publishing still hasn’t earned the respect that it could due to poorly edited books, ugly or poorly-designed book covers, and a general lack of quality in the books that authors self-publish. The average person also doesn’t know how to market their work effectively, at least not without a considerable amount of research. And don’t even get me started on eBook formatting and conversion – that’s such a specific process that it requires a lot of attention to detail, some knowledge of HTML and CSS, and patience for cleaning up and optimizing code.
That’s what this book is here to teach you. Self-publishing is a much more cost-effective way to publish than vanity publishing, which essentially takes advantage of authors and their desire to be published by charging outrageous prices for their services. Self-publishing can be achieved on a shoestring budget with a bit of knowledge in some key areas of the field.
With that being said, the chapters of this book will take you through some basic editing and revision tips, the best ways to distribute and make your book available to the most people, how to make sure your book covers are professional, and several ways to market your book, including free press releases and online advertising.
Throughout this process, please keep in mind that there may be some unique-to-you situations or troubleshooting problems which will need a little more research for the inexperienced self-publisher; however, this book will give you a good, solid foundation of how to self-publish and make your work professional and marketable without the major publisher label.

Chapter 1 Writing and Editing Your Book
Writing
Writing a book is a lot different than writing an article or blog post. It takes time, revising, editing, and determination to finish a project of such size, especially depending on what kind of book you’re working on. If you’re working on some sort of epic novel or lengthy manuscript, then you’re probably someone who writes on a regular basis. If you’re working on a poetry book, the same can be said.
If you’re a public speaker, in sales, or an expert in another field or industry, then writing may not be your best skill, which is another reason why I’m putting this book together.
It amazes me how often I come across web sites online that contain written content that makes zero sense at best. The sentence structure is poor, the content is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, and it becomes very difficult for people to read. What’s worse is that, if the potential customer or client is reading through the web site expecting high-quality writing, they are likely to turn away because they can’t work their way through the content without noticing a slew of mistakes.
That’s what tends to happen to me. I go to a web site that is supposed to be a professional business site and am immediately thrown off by the lack of language skills displayed in the content. It’s like seeing a billboard with a proud, 90-foot tall misspelling or grammatical error.
So, how do you make sure that you’re writing something that won’t flop? The truth is you just can’t. All you can really do is write good, quality work that is useful and/or entertaining to your reader and develop good marketing skills.
